Hello !
There is a lip seal here.
Replacement is easy. Lean the bike on it's right cylinder head, remove the selector and the pedal, then pry off the old seal and using a suitable socket press the new one in. Refit pedal and selector, set the bike on it's stand, and you're done !

Be sure to purchase the correct size seal. Also note the setting depth of the existing seal. Avoid pushing the seal in too far -it's way easy to do.

Motobins have them. Seal is 26x16x7

If you lie the bike on the right side, no need to drain the gearbox.
Ask for help to return the bike to it's normal position to avoid breaking your back loose...

I replaced mine and had it continue to leak. I guess the shaft was worn as well.
I replaced that seal with a 26 x 15 x 7 seal from a bearing shop and it has worked fine for many years.
The tighter seal survives because the shaft only turns back and forth as you change gears.

I presume it's the same size for the mono and other 5 speeds.   Mine has started leaking too, suspiciously soon after using synthetic in the gearbox.  Tossing up whether to change the oil and see what happens, or just replace the seal anyway.   I have a week off next week...it shouldn't take that long....

I'd try replacing the seal

Lip seals are such common engineering items. There are a few places on an arihead where the correct BMW sourced seal is important but I very much doubt this is one of them. So I'd be with Bruce on sourcing one from a local bearing shop. Should be a fraction of the motobins price.

Maybe the price won't be that different but postage costs and local shopping make THE difference...
