Charging System Replacement
« on: September 10, 2012, 10:54:30 AM »
I was at a Tech Day session in PA last spring, and one of the fellows noticed that my "GEN" light comes on at idle, saying that it wasn't a great sign.  I read the sale listing for an R65 on ebay the other day and the seller mentioned that he installed a EURO MOTOELECTRICS 450w Charging System in his bike, (and now for some reason he wants to sell it.)

Has anyone installed this system on their R65 and can offer an opinion?  Also, the vendor offers the system with a 107mm stator, and a 105mm stator.  Can anyone tell me which one fits an R65?

First of the gen light will come on at idle which is normal. It should go out around 1500 to 2000 RPMS. Does you light stay on at higher RPMS or go out. As far as change the system out. I have installed the 450 watt omega system the voltage regulator is set to give you the max voltage at 1500 RPMS. All the bike from 1977 to 1995 use the 107 mm size stator. Below is the link to Ricks.

Your PA tech friend is quite misinformed.

I don't know what price the seller is asking, but in Snowbums airhead tech site, a side by side comparison was done with the Enduralast and Omega charging systems .

In the test, the Enduralast system did not put out anywhere near the claimed rating .

Yeah, the Gen light drops right out if I rev the throttle. I idle around 1100 or so and the light flickers on if I stop at a light or pull in to park.  I guess unless I want to add lots of power draw accessories like heated clothing, I will stick with what is already working. Thanks

If you ever purchase anything from Motorrad Elektrik, I would highly suggest getting the airhead charging book/guide that Rick Jones, the owner of Motorrad Elektrik has put together .

There will be no problem troubleshooting your charging system with it .

How many miles are on your bike ?

Around 50,000 miles or so, I would check the slip ring brushes for condition, new brushes are about .75 inches long .
