This one that I put in the FAQ section should be of some help
http://www.bmwr65.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1339637883Also, if you are going to remove the flywheel then it is VERY important that you FIRST block the crankshaft from moving forward BEFORE you start removing the flywheel. The simplest way to block the crank is to remove the front cover from the engine, exposing the rotor/alternator. One can then insert a sawed-off allen-key (hex rod) into the end of the rotor bolt (or some folks just get a suitably sized nylon bolt from the hardware store and jam it in the allen-key hole at the end of the rotor bolt). You want this to protrude/be proud of the end of the rotor by a almost an inch, I think. Then, put the front cover back on and slowly tighten the bolts on either side of it until it is well snugged up against the object you stuck in the rotor bolt end - don't try to crank the front cover all the way back into its normal position our how may ruin things, but you DO want it to be solidly pushing back inward on the rotor to keep the crank from moving foward even the tiniest bit while you are messing about with the flywheel.
This crankshaft blocking is to prevent a thrust washer inside the engine case from becoming dislodged from its precarious position at the back inside face of the engine block where the crankshaft goes through. IF that little dodger falls out of position, it will bind up the crank and require a major amount of engine disassembly to get it and and replace it.
