Seat options for the R65
« on: May 24, 2012, 07:05:14 PM »
Hi  - Just got a virtually NOS '84 R65 with only 5003 km (genuine mileage).  My only concern is that the stock the seat is very uncomfortable after about an hour. It looks to me like Corbin does not make a saddle for this model year, but they will made a seat if I ship them the old one or the seat pan. Has anyone ever done this and if so how did it turn out?  Are there any other seat options available for this year?

Cheers
Dan

You shouldn't need to be looking specifically for a 1984 seat, any of the twin shock R65's should fit.
The LS has a different shaped seat but I suspect the base, hinges and latch are all the same.

Another option, Dan, might be to have a local automotive upholstery shop rebuild your seat. Many different foam density materials are available. Some shops will use two different density layers under the cover.

Sending your seat to Corbin for a rebuild will be pricey. I have one on my Tri Trophy that ultimately was rebuilt locally. Plus, you may not be able to select the padding as you might with a local shop as emailing descriptions of how your fanny will feel might not be practical. Kinda like Forrest Gump, "... you never know what you're gonna get."

Myself, I am saving up for one of these:

R45, R65 from 9/80 until 9/85            52 53 1 242 160z      175.63€       (no VAT)

$220 USD + shipping from Europe.  Not too bad, I would say.

I bought my G/S solo seat/rack from them, and a R65 "Official" (solo, again) seat, and both were seamless transactions with VERY comfortable seats as a result.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have a Corbin seat for my '72 Norton Commando and it is really comfortable, but they produce them and sell them by the 100's so the fit and comfort has been worked out.  I tend to agree about the Forrest Gump risk with a one off so far away without actual fitting.  I think I will try to sort out something locally.  In the mean time, a local distributor was clearing out Airhawk seat pads, so I am going to try that as an interim measure. At $75 the risk is low and I can use it on other bikes.

Many people like the Airhawk - I was thinking of trying one myself on my R65LS seat -oh the price we pay to remain in fashion!  ;-)
