Clutch input spline lube 82 R65LS 15K

looking to the wisdom of this forum on whether I need to lube the clutch spline (input shaft) or maybe something else

When down shifting primarily into 3 and lower I get a little "argument" from the tranny, it downshifts but, at times (not all the time) it gives me a little grind....I ocassion shifting from 4 to 5, it seems to get lost in between???

As I slow down say under 25 - 30 mph, clutch engaged and downshift without releasing the clutch the downshifting seems better???

As usual the advice I get from this forum is "priceless".  

Oh, by the way the safety neutral switch removal and replacement went well, (but a a real pain in the A.. with the aluminum spacer.

Have you checked the clutch cable adjustment ?

Any sloppiness in the shift linkage/sift lever attachment ?

I don't know how long you've been riding your R65, but preloading the shifter before shifting seems to help a bit .

In my particular instance, the type of shoe/boot makes a difference in my shifting .

New clutch cable within the last 1K miles, and adjusted properly.  I purchased from a member of this forum an adjustable shift linkage, that he manufactured, removing the "coat hanger" OEM.  The forum member advised, when I purchased it, it would adjusted pretty darn close.  Can you advise, how to make "fine tuned adjustments"?  It has adjustment capability on both ends?

I concur the preloaded does help, as does a lighter boot other than my standard fare, Aerostitch touring lights.

I have the same adjustable link from Justin, I adjusted it to the same length as the OEM part, I don't think I've gone back to readjustit since .

You can try adjusting one thread at a time and see if it makes any real difference in shifting .

It sounds like the splines may need a good cleaning and lubrication, with everything you've done so far .

Once you do it the first time, it's not a real daunting task .

When you get rusted fasteners, etc... out of the way the first time, it's about a 4-5 hour job .

Loosen both jam nuts at the Heim joints. The shaft has left and right-handed threads so its a simple matter to turn the shaft and position the shift rubber as you desire. Keeps an equal amount of threads in each Heim joint.

This also saves detaching the Heim joints from the shift lever and/or trans lever, turning, refitting to check, removing, adjusting... ad infinitum. Don't forget to snug up the jam nuts when finished.
