Final Drive
« on: April 05, 2012, 08:42:17 PM »
Who has rebuilt thier final drive. The question I have is on a final drive for 80 R65. The BMW manual calls out remove a screw the appears to keep the pinion bearing in place. This screw or pin does not have a slot to unscrew it. I used a vise gripe to try to remove it and it would not move. It also looks to be peened. I am going to try and drill this pin out before I remove the pinion bearing. I have a new final drive off of a 81 RT that is appart and the pin is not in this so I can assume that the pin is not really need when  I go back together. Am I think right on this.

I've replaced seals in a 1980, but didn't take the pinion out - was in there to renew the splines. I'm having difficulty picturing this pin that's giving you trouble. Maybe it's because I didn't touch the pinion...
