82 R65LS OEM Handlbars
« on: April 02, 2012, 08:36:24 AM »
Greetings,

Can anyone tell me or point me into the direction where I can find out what handlebars came on the R65LS in 82?  Mine are chrome, but have seen pictures of other R65LS's that are black???

thanks

The standard bars were black.   There are (2) types as installed by the factory - a short/Europe bar set with only about 1.5 - 2 inch rise (at most) and which are narrow.  When installed, the front brake master cylinder is tucked up very close to the tachometer.  These were standard issue on European models and also Canada.
USA bikes had a taller, wider set installed.  These had about 5 inch rise, were at least 4-6 inches wider and pulled back pretty far.

If using the short bars, you need to either use the TALL/LONG stemmed rearview mirrors (these are actually not that easy to get anymore for some reason) or else use bar-end mirrors like the Napoleons..  otherwise you'll mostly just see your own upper arms/shoulders and not any vehicles behind you.

Quite a few folks installed bars from the K75 model on their airheads - same diameter, and somewhat in between as far as height/pullback goes.   Possibly that is what is on your bike?

You should be able to order either of the black bars from a dealer.   Or watch Ebay, etc. for used parts.
If switching between long and short black bars, there are several cables that also need to be replaced - otherwise too long or too short..
