R65 Help!!

Hello Beemer Nuts-I have just located your forum,hopefully you can help a" has been" nut regain some sanity on his R65!For now,just let me say thanks for the admission,and introduce myself somewhat.I am 62,been around/ridden since approx. 1962.I have a 1976 R75/6 and a 1981 R65[problem child],as well as several other oddball/semi classic/even junk bikes.I am in Gulf Coast Florida,so riding CAN be a full time occupation,sadly,it is not.I hope in  future posts some help can be gleaned from the members of this group,and hopefully I can supply input on other bikes/issues[I have experience on MOST 1958-1970 bikes,excluding HD]. OK-here goes-in advance,many thanks for any ideas.1981 R 65 approx 77K showing-Running fine,I put bike in garage in October,fuel tap off,drained carbs.Full fuel in tank with Lucas additive.Went to start bike approx 6 wks later,ran fine[as is possible]on Right side only,left squirted gas from the black "Bing" side plate on LEFT carb.Took carb apart,cleaned it,popped it back on.Now,NO start at all-great spark/compression will snap your thumb from head.Quick start[one shot ONLY] did not help.Took off fuel line,turned on fuel tap,good fuel delivery.Any ideas??I am putting dents in my forehead quicker than I can get them parked at the local Wally world on this one.Possible explanation re now being in Floral City Fl from Great White North--we were playing hockey on Lake Ontario, just off Kingston on a foggy winter night in 1991.I got a break away,and with the darkness,the rest is some sort of history.I will post pics of my frustrating R 65 as soon as I can master the digital camera

It sounds like - at least initially, that the float needle couldn't shut off the flow of gas into the carb, and it completely flooded the left side.   Could be from sticking float, worn/dried out needle tip or some crud migrating down the fuel line.   But, now that is cleaned out, well, are you certain that the carb was re-assembled properly?   IF you took the enrichment circuit disk out, it is easy to put them back in the wrong position.   What is the fuel level in the carb float bowl now?   Should be somewhere around ~8mm below the top of the bowl.. are you trying to start the bike onthe sidestand, or on centerstand?
Do you see or smell raw gas being pumped into the exhaust while cranking the engine?   The right cylinder no longer fires?

Are you getting fuel into both float bowls when the petcock is turned on? Drop the float bowls to confirm. The fuel lines may be deteriorating internally and small bits might clog the float needle and seat. An inline fuel filter is a nice addition. I use a small filter that's often seen on lawn mowers.

Is the small 'jet' in the bottom of the enrichener reservoir clear and allowing fuel to fill the reservoir which feeds the enrichener circuit? Thin copper wire strand can clear any blockage.

Since it was at least starting on one cylinder before the one-carb rebuild, and now not starting at all, it's quite possible ignition is the problem. If starting fluid doesn't make a difference, that points to spark.

One thing to keep in mind is spark may look good in open air at atmospheric pressure, but not so hot at 150 PSI.

It's possible the spark isn't happening at the correct time. I've had the hall sensor fail - where it ran fine when parked, then wouldn't start up again next time. Since it had been running priorly one would assume the ignition is fine. But we all know where assumptions take us!

It's time for some more in-depth trouble shooting to figure out what exactly is going on. I'm guessing it aint fuel related at this point.

Have you tried putting a few drops of fuel into the spark plug holes, then try starting ?

Waht color is the spark, when you have the plugs removed and sitting on the cylinder fins and use the starter ?

Starting with the '81 model year bikes, BMW went to a single coil with dual outputs, this gray and black coil earned the name crack-o-matic coil .

It's purpose in life is to have cracks develop in the plastic body/case and then cause ignition problems until you replace it .

But it usually causes problems in damp weather, from the sounds of your location, it's probably a a salt water coastal area .

The obvious eludes all of us at sometime or other-me it seems more often-the fuel tap had just enough crap in it that it would impede the flow with fuel line on,and,when I removed the line to inspect it for flow,I believe the twisting/tugging allowed just enough fuel through.I replaced the fuel lines as suggested,added some carb cleaner and fresh gas,the beast fired in about 3 seconds.Many thanks for all of the input you folks have given me!I hope to be able to return the favours in sort sometime-I have lots of BSA/Norton/Triumph experience/literature/service notes etc as well as some for 1960-1069 Jap/Italian stuff.

Glad you got that sorted out! In the end, it's usually something simple, but who woulda guessed it was plugged filter screens with those symptoms?

Canuck the question now is where did all that crud come from.  Check your gas tank when it is close to empty.  See if you can see any rust or the inside coating peeling off.  My '79 was doing this and I cleaned the inside and re-coated it with POR 15.  The paint did a great job.
