My points 79 has two coils supposedly BMW but marked made in Brazil. they work fine though.
The '79 is a different design than the '83 that the original poster is talking about.

I have two separate (6v each, wired in series) coils, too.  With the standard broken front coil mount (they were subject to breakage).

Unless the bike has been modified, a '78-'80 will have points ignition with two separate coils.
The '81-on bikes will have electronic ignition with one dual-output coil.

NGK is pretty big worldwide - surely they are available somewhere.

Well you would think so. I have never seen them though. I too am running 5K caps without problems just thought it would be nice to have the correct 1K caps for the points ignition bike.

My '83 R65 came with ghetto-rigged two 6v coils attached to the frame'sbackbone with hose clamps. Looked crappy, but it ran. A proper Dyna coil from Rick Jones, plus new leads and NGK caps, quickly replaced the bodged setup. Both coils were VW units from Brazil.

"Strangely enough the bike is running well except in extremely wet conditions."

Not strange at all. Faults are in your ignition system and manifest themselves when humidity is high with fog and/or rain. Dump those odd bits and you'll ride happy.

Just to finish this thread----
I received this week a Dyna coil and bracket from Rick. He is most efficient and reasonable with his price $125.50 in total including shipping to Ireland. I have fitted the coil with new NGK caps and copper core leads. I have taken the bike out today for a run in torrential rain with no problems. Actually I think the bike was running much better. Many thanks to Rob Valdez and all folks.
