Suggestions on whether I should leave stock or go to a Valeo starter?

Thanks

If it was me I'd be tempted by the lighter weight and lower current draw of the Valeo but I'd keep the original Bosch as a spare.

You might want to read this for lots of discussion on different starters. Bear in mind you want a 9 tooth. http://www.boxerworks.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3223

The REALLY high performaing starter motors are Nippondenso, I believe.   But, I think that the glue problem with the Valeo units has certainly been sorted out by now, and they are more efficient though the Bosch units (as you might expect from German engineering) are almost perpetually rebuildable..

Do a cleaning and lubrication on the Bosch starter, replace brushes and the OEM starter will last your lifetime .

Now, if my starter wasn't economically rebuildable, I think I would go with the Nippondenso starter, Motorrad Elektrik had them on their website, but checking today, I can't find it there .

I just went with a Valeo.  It appears that the Valeo is what BMW currently offers for these bikes, and it is rebuildable.  Check www.euromotoelectrics.com for starters -- they beat the dealer's price by a lot.    Here is a link to the Valeo starter for our bikes http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/BMW_R_Airhead_VALEO_Starter_9_T_12_41_9_062_425_p/bmw-val1.htm

I don't have any problems with the Valeos and would recommend them. But I would first suggest rebuilding the Bosch. Replacing all four bushings should take care of any difficulties. After that, it's just brushes and solenoid contacts (if the solenoid is rebuildable - I don't recall).

That Nippondenso sounds like a great starter - but it definitely aint cheap!
