Can I reuse my rotor bolts?
« on: September 26, 2011, 07:47:24 PM »
In the past, certain motorcycles I have owned suggested that new rotor bolts be used with a rotor install. I have just picked up a serviceable used R65 rotor for my front brake- do I need to replacwe the rotor bolts?
Thnks in advance...

I reused mine several years ago.
While I have had "incidents", none were related to disc fastener failure...

Inspect the bolts, if there are no wear grooves in the unthreaded area , reuse them .

I've re-used mine many times without incident. As a matter of fact, I'd never heard of replacing them, so this is a new idea.

BTW, was the original rotor junk? I'd be interested in getting it from you.

My old one has worn in a very uneven manner. I am looking to change pads, clean the caliper, and install the new rotor.

wirespokes- let me make the swap and I'll be in touch

Like this?

It still worked well, but when an aftermarket came up on sale I replaced it.  The original had about 80,000 miles on it.

When you say "clean the caliper", do you mean open it up and do the job right?

And don't be too disappointed if your pistons are corroded.  A machine shop should be able to turn out a couple for not too much money (stainless steel).  Just take in one of your old ones.

Some would say that this corrosion is not so bad that it couldn't be reused - so long as the corroded part doesn't contact the brake piston seal.
At the time, Motobins was selling them (NLA), so I didn't even think about it and replaced with new.
BMW does not offer them.
