If I knew of a kit here in the US, I'd build one.

I'm sure the Velleman kit is available in the US.  I've corresponded with Snowbum about it and he is well aware that they exist over there. The kit is sometimes marketed under a few different names but they are all the same.

Here's one I found.

Thanks Barry! I'll have to see if my local electronics supply has it.

Do the cats all wear big grins where you live?

Not so much these days!

The origin of the phrase "grinning like a Cheshire cat" is uncertain. It's thought it might have originated  from Cheshire have a lot of dairy farming so the "cat got the cream" another phrase meaning someone looking pleased with themselves. The Cheshire cat was then made famous by the character in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

"All Electronics"  carries Velleman in the US but doesn't list the kit.  I'll bet they would carry it if they got a few inquiries.  THey also have some fine small cast metal boxes.  A bushing on the screw hole on the TIP and a mica insulator should do the trick for mounting to the box as a heat sink. "ALL" carrries those parts as well.   You might think about adding a dpdt switch for in and out switching.

I heard of someone doing that on another type of points amplifier. It would be the ultimate in easy changing back to the stock points setup. Not sure how that would work with the Velleman Kit in respect of switching the condenser in and out of circuit as the condenser wiring would extend some distance from the points. The velleman built in capacitor is .22 microfarads which given the wide tolerances on capacitors is much the same as the .20 micofarads stock condenser.

Here's another circuit design I came across with the switch built in and it addresses the issue by both using the same capacitor.
