Tranny input seal replacement
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:55:45 AM »
Hi all.  Pulled the tranny back for a spline lube and I've got some gear oil leaking from the input seal.  I pulled the tranny and its on the bench waiting for the new seal to arrive.  Replacement does not look fun -- anyone done this job before and have any hints to offer?  Thanks in advance for any responses.

The seal can be replaced without going into the transmission .

You need something like a fine point scribe to get the old seal out .

Place a piece of tape over the splines of the input shaft, so you don't damage the seal going back on .

+1 What Bob said.  It isn't nearly as bad as replacing the rear main seal on the engine!

Good luck to you, take your time and note carefully how far in the old seal is seated so you don't try to overdrive the new one in.

Try not to be tempted to drive a screwdriver between the old seal and the case.  You can easily damage the soft aluminum.

I say this merely as a precautionary warning - definitely a "do as I say, not as I do", because that is exactly what mine came down to on a replacement gearbox I purchased last year.  But by the time I got that nasty, old seal out of there, it was obvious I never would have gotten it out any other way, short of opening the box and pushing it out from the inside.  It is an older gearbox without the external reinforcing ribs that all R65s have, and it was either the original seal, or it had been ridden in a LOT of rain.  The internal steel ring of that seal was rusted quite thoroughly.

I haven't put many miles on mine, so far, but I think it is holding...

Thanks for the info.  I should get the new seal tomorrow -- hopefully removal and installation will be smooth as possible.
