R65 1981 Timing chain finished
« on: July 11, 2010, 04:04:41 PM »
I have changed the timing chain successfully I hope.
It was not easy to align camshaft and crankshaft markings.
I selected 3 gear I think and turned the back wheel forward.
When I tried for a hour to align the markings I turned the wheel backward for a few centimeters. Suddenly I remembered something about NOT to turn the wheel/engine backwards.
What horrible thing may happen if turn the wheel backward?
I think I have got a new knocking noise from the gearbox area.
Engine is not started, I heard the noise when rolling my bike.
When I increased speed, the noise frequency increased.
Any ideas?

I doubt you have a transmission issue but I'd confirm no valve-to-piston contact before engine start.

Pull the spark plugs and s-l-o-w-l-y rotate the engine. Confirm all timing marks. Report back with latest... [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Guess what bike which started after my timing chain change?
My R65. The only sound I can hear from the engine is the valves and that is OK. It is really satisfying  to accomplish this myself.
No strange sounds in gearbox or anywhere else.
Thank you all for good advices.
