Missing Electrical Part?
« on: February 14, 2010, 12:23:18 PM »
Hi Gang:

I've been putting my wiring harness together and have a funny feeling I'm missing maybe the voltage regulator for my R65LS - there's a link below that shows a black box that is rearward, towards the rear of the round frame tube - it looks like it sits in the square box - right behind it is a blue relay with a black cap (guessing for hooking up hazard flashers). I'm suspicious because I have a plug on the wiring harness, also rearward that plugs into "something I seem to be missing. Can anyone tell me what that part is supposed to be and assuming I don't have it, guessing I should buy new rather than used.  Maybe where to buy?

Thanks much,

Ken

Ken,

I believe you're talking about the horn relay.  The black box hanging in my photo links with the "L" bracket is the fuse box.

Here's a sketch of my horn relay, remember I have dual Fiamm's mounted on my 81 R65.

Mike - you continue to be one of the miracle men from this forum - thanks!  Hopefully we'll figure out if that's what it is but you're probably right.
Remember that little irregular shaped plastic piece that came off the frame?  I can't find the picture but didn't you say that goes under the two holes under the right side of the frame where the brake relay goes?

I'm hoping she'll be ready to ride by May - mine is in a friends worshop and not super convenient to access(he only works there on certain nights) but no room in my cold Minnesota garage anyway - we got the new tires & tubes mounted BT45's, the new floating rotors and rebuilt Brembos are on and the wiring harness almost completely installed.  Working on some dash parts - Rob from this forum has come up with a couple missing parts I'll need for the turn signal lenses (missing).  Where the ashtray was, we're installing an aluminum plate, painting it black after installing a round voltmeter & a John Deere Aux power plug.   Lots of many many details!  how's yours coming?

Ken,

You lost me...are you talking about the rear brake switch that monts along the lower right side rear frame gusset? Is this it?

Hi Ken

I have a 'empty square' bracket towards the rear of the main frame tube.
Attached is a photo showing it. The connector with the cap is possibly hazard lights as you suspect.
From the factory the bracket has the starter relay and the flasher unit (green box).
(The other relays in my photo were added by my me for the headlight heavy duty wiring and the fuse box is also non standard).

The voltage regulator is about midway along the main frame tube under the tank.
These photos are my 12/84 EUR model. I know earlier and US models have some differences.

Hope this helps.

Mine is different - when I figure it out, will send a post.

But there is a small plastic plastic piece I pulled off the frame when I pulled off the wiring harness 0 it's a strange shape - I'll try to find the picture again.  Just don't know where it goes.
