Bike Didn't Pass Emissions Test
« on: April 05, 2007, 04:04:20 PM »
Took my bike in for the annual emissions test , and it failed. I was adjusting the carbs with a Twinmax synchronizer, and I thought I had it adjusted correctly. But it failed miserably at more than twice the maximum limit. Any hints on carb synchronizing, it's my weak spot on my bike, about the only thing I've really had problems doing. I forgot about the Colortune tool that I got off of eBay about 6 months ago, so I'll give that a try next week on my first day off.

C'mon over and I'll have it tuned to perfection! I use a slightly less sophisticated balancer but it werks. When mine was tested they only performed an idle test. What kind of shape are your needle screws / O rings for same in?

Well , I got the carbs synched today, finally found two problems causing me the headache on this project. The o-ring on the left carb mixture screw was torn up, and I found the ignition lead for the left cylinder had backed out a ways on the ignition coil. Corrected both of these issues, and had the carbs synched in about 10 minutes. Now I have to wait for rush hour traffic to die down, and head back to the emissions testing station and see how good of a job I did! Thanks for the tip Rich! I was real close to sending you a PM for help!

That sux, not only does the state gouge the hell out of you on your registration you have to have it sniffed!!?? :o  I bought a '73 Honida 450 when I was stationed at Ft. Huachuca in the early 70s and 'bout had a stroke when I got a registration renewal for $300-$400!!!  Being military I didn't have to pay it but it really made me feel sorry for you guys.  I got the bike to TX and it cost $5.50.  But, that is up to almost $50 now...

AT the moment in NH, you have to have your bike plugged in for inspection if it has onBoardDiagnostics,
which only the later K bikes and Oilheads have, so another plus for owning an airhead !

Well , the bike passed the emissions test , but not by much ( the unburned hydrocarbons were at 90% of the allowable limit)  it looks like I still have a little more work to do there. But with this test out of the way, the bike is going to get some much needed work done. The transmission is coming out for an overhaul, clutch will be looked at to see if it still is within limits (79,000 miles), and if not I'll have it rebuilt and have the pressure plates trued up as well. Oil pump cover o-ring replacement, I replaced the rear main seal 7 years ago, so I don't think it will need it, but I'll check it out to make sure. Final drive output seal and brake shaft seals will be replaced. Fork seals, springs replaced, install gaiters. Clean inspect lube and replace if necessary the steering head bearings. Install the floating steel rotors, new pads, and with the condition of fluid in the calipers that have been posted here, it's probably a good time to replace the seals and dust caps on both calipers as well, as they are original. Have the rear tire replaced, as it's just at the wear bars. Looks like I'll be a bit busy on the R65 for a month or two!

Congrats on passing the test.  What RPM do they sniff at?  If a higher RPM then the worn jets/needles as suggested on Boxerworks might be the culprit - or maybe the enrichers are not closing all the way, that happened on my '95 R100RT...

They only test at idle, I think it would be a good time to pull the carbs apart and go through them, as all I've done in 26 years and 79,000 miles is replace the rubber, plastic 'comsumable' items. Time to get serious and look  the moving metal parts over, or just replace them on the general principle that they have seen a fair amount of use. I'll get to use my ultrasonic cleaner and see what kind of job it does, now that I have a cleaning solution formulated for aluminum use. Looks like the valve covers will fit in there as well.

Registration isn't bad for a 26 year old vehicle, only $19. But I have opted for a Historic Motorcycle plate, and that is $10 a year more, but the emissions test is $19, and you get one free retest.

OK, $19 is not too bad, less than half of ours.  But when I got that big bill in 1974 for a 1 year old motorcycle...

If the sniff is at idle that takes out the part throttle and main circuits.  Check the enrichers to make sure they are shutting all the way off and if they are I would adjust the mixture screws for the best idle and then crank them back as far closed as possible that would still allow itt to idle - next time.  Leaning one way out might raise NOX levels but if they're not testing for them...
