Digital Tire Pressure Gauges
« on: December 21, 2009, 11:27:45 AM »
I'm looking for a digital tire pressure gauge, I've been using a 'pencil' type gauge for the last couple of years, after my last digital gauge quit .

Biggest problem I've found, is that all the bikes I have, have dual front discs, which complicates access to the valve stem , with the readily available digital gauges .

I've got a 90 degree valve stem extension, but I'd like to get a gauge, that I can use without it .

Anybody out there have one that you're satisfied with ?

Sorry I can't help with a digital gauge. Why not stick with the pencil type.  My last one lasted 20 years until stupidly I managed to loose it.  Finding a quality replacement wasn't easy as they are nearly all digital now.

I have this thing about any measuring device with a digital display. The problem is they give the illusion of being accurate to the least significant digit when in reality they are not likely to be anywhere near that good maybe no more accurate than an equivalent analoge device.  I have used an old Model 8 AVO multimeter for years until recently it was broken when it fell off the bench. I was heart broken. They are now very very expensive so I suppose I'll have to go digital after all. Maybe I'll get used to it.

Bob,
I use the dial type they sell at Autozone without clearance problems. the mall over in Chandler has these and they do look decent if it's a digital you have your mind set on

The LS wheel isn't a problem, the snowflake front wheel with dual discs, is a little tighter, and the oilhead, is impossible to get to, and looking at the 650 Guzzi, it's going to be problematic as well .

I had a digital gauge from NAPA auto parts, bought it in 2002, after I got the oilhead, it had a round gauge, like the 'analog' type, with a foot long hose with a pressure bleeder valve, it worked great, until the 'ribbon cable' from the pressure transducer to the LCD developed broken wires at the pc board, I repaired these solder joints about 10 times, and then couldn't repair it anymore, from what I can tell, this is a common problem with these type gauges .

Bob,
I use a VDO analog dial pressure guage. Works perfect for the snowflakes and dual rotors. I couldn't find a part number on it but it's worked flawlessly for many many years. Has about a 2" solid nipple valve with no flex lines. I can take a photo and send it to you if you like. I would highly recommend this type of guage.

Bob, I've given up on the digital gauges.  I have 3 of them and I find they are inconsistent.  I have gone back to the pencil analog type which I think is more consistent in its readings.

I'd be curious to know what others experience has been with these digital gauges.

I have one I bought from Roadgear...for about 20 bucks. Works well for me.....seems to be very accurate. When I first got it I check it with a pencil type.....and the gauge built into the compressor hose. It is a lot easier to read than the compressor gauge.  Then I saw what looks like the exact same air gauge at Wal Mart for about 7 bucks.
