Hold on a sec', Hunsta...

You have a 1984 model? Idle speed should be no less than 1000 rpm. This idle speed is required to maintain lubrication to the timing chain and related components; ie" cam gear, crank gear, tensioner and guide.

Earlier BMWs had an entirely different oiling system design and could safely idle at 850 rpm +/- without prematurely wearing out the timing chain and gear teeth.

1000-1050 rpm idle speed, please.

Yeah Haynes manual states 800-1100 rpm. So who knows. maybe it was higher than I thought. Seems to run ok now. Tis idling at about 900ish now, when fully warmed up. I`ll knock it up a tad and see how that goes.

Light flywheel (i.e. clutch carrier) models (any bike post 81) need more revs to idle properly as they have not got the weight of a proper flywheel to keep the engine going.

You will find that your bike will continuously stall the bike if you set the idle too low.  There is no advantage to setting the idle low.

Also they are not charging at that RPM.

If you have a post 81 machine set the idle at 11-1200rpm.  If you are using the bike in winter with lights and other ancilliaries (heated grips etc) then consider puting the idle up to 1400rpm (or just enough for the charging light to extinguish) to keep your battery healthy.

Haynes are just generalising between heavy and light flywheel models.

Yeah gets down to about 20C (65F)average here in winetr here in Qld Aust. Not much point in heated grips unless travelling far south. But thanks for the advice.

Re Heated grips and lights:

Yeah we still have a winter here in the UK.  Perhaps that will all change with 'Global Warming'.

It will not be long until I will be riding to and from work in the dark, even in good old Blighty.

Still we do not have any Roo's to avoid on our roads - or big spiders hiding in the dunny!
