sump gasket
« on: August 09, 2009, 07:42:13 PM »
I am trying to replace the sump gasket on my '79 R65.   I removed all 14 bolts and washers and tried Snowbums trick of placing a block of wood on the sump and then smacking that with a hammer.   I think the gasket material has bonded with the sump at the molecular level at this point.   I did a search here but could not find anything on topic.   Sorry if there is and I missed it.   Other than this little problem I rode it for two hours yesterday and it ran perfect.

Thanks again for the help. :)

It's not a great way to remove the oil sump, but you're going to have to use something like a thin metal blade, a paint scraper, and work it between the sump, and the engine .

Go slow and don't use to much impact force .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

IF the rubber mallet tapping isn't working, sometimes one does have to start cutting - as Bob indicates, use a thin blade and go slowly.  Be careful/aware NOT to gouge the relatively soft alloy of the engine case /sump mating surfaces.  You may just have to cut a little ways to get it to budge, but I would try tapping from different directions/locations before I resort to cutting.

May be too late for you this time but RealGaskets.com makes a silicone gasket for the oil pan that seals well without goo and is reusable. Seals well even if the surface is slightly irregular.
Just a satisfied user.
