R65 muffler value
« on: July 09, 2009, 01:38:25 PM »
I have a small window of opportunity to maybe purchase a pair of used R65-compatible chrome mufflers. Manufacturer and/or brand unknown. Owner says make me an offer. DuOh!

I really don't have a clue what they may be worth so I've come to the Altar of R65 Knowledge seeking wisdom.

Here's three photos of the exhaust and what I've noticed, so far:

I see what appears to be some light rust pitting on the forward half of the left muffler. May buff out a bit, if it's surface pitting, but may not. Have not seen the bottoms of the mufflers.

A few small dings in the cone of the right side muffler.

Right side muffler upper surface.

I'm looking for your comments and guesstimated value for the mufflers. They might look good on the '83 as the black BMW R65LS cans just don't have that bling to go with the soon to be sprayed new metallic blue. Can y'all help a fella out with a few ideas? Thanks.

I don't know what they're worth used like that but I'd want to inspect the seams at the bottom of the muffler.  This is where they rust out first.  The mufflers I have on my bike look pristeen from the top (as in your pics) but underneath both seams are rusted and one is rusted right through.

I while back I bought a pattern set on Ebay made by Brituro.  The quality looks good and they seem nearly new but they are substantially louder than the original Zeuna’s - perhaps why they were sold.  I think I paid around £70  which  is approx half the new price.

Check the area where the angle mounting bracket bolts to the muffler, quite common to get 2-3 inch cracks coming out of the area .

If they are aftermarket they aren't worth much unless they are perfect.  I put a set of the Emgo on my '75 90/6 when I took off the 2-1 noisemaker and they looked and fit like factory.

Justin, are they louder or pretty much the same as stock?

Unfortunately, the Emgo mufflers are no go for the R45-R65 series. The mounting tab is 2-3 inches off.   Monte

Seems they were real close to stock.  I currently have Macs, which are considerably "throatier" than the stockers...

Monte, I got a great OEM pair from Re-Psycle for about $175. I have a back up pair of new s/s Epcos, which gave off an annoying resonance. Tom, at Epco kindly offered to take them back and make them quieter. Nine months later, he returned them to me and I will be putting themj on tomorrow for a test run. I'll report back.
