Dyna Coil

Swapping out my original coil for a Dyna one part of a quick preventative maintenance program I did last week.  I got the coil from Motorrad Electrik (“brown” 1.5 ohms – my R65 is an 84/5 with electronic ignition).  The bracket it came with was OK, but I thought I could do something better.  Basically I formed a bracket using some scrap 7075, dimensioned it to my particular application, and grit blasted it to take the shine off.   Two hours start to finish (from opening the box the coil came in and deciding to make my own bracket to doing a quick check ride around the block on the finished project).

Did a 100-mile round trip fun run this morning (is it fun when as soon as you walk out the house it starts to rain and it stops as soon as you get back) and didn’t miss a beat.

If anyone wants the bracket that came with the coils, it’s yours for postage.

Kind of curious, what differences are there between the two brackets ?

Bob, my bracket is made from thinner material (0.08 vs. 0.16”) and the coil sits on top of the bracket whereas it is suspended from the Motorrad Electrik version.  The coils sits about the same fore/aft, but a little lower in my installation.  The mating surface on my bracket against the frame is also larger, mainly so that I had plenty of room for the mounting holes as I marked these once I had trial-fitted/adjusted the coil/bracket into the position I wanted, but also I might get a little more vibration transmitted to the coil with the thinner bracket material and I think the better the mounting the less likelihood there is of this being an issue.  I believe I have a well considered custom installation, but time will tell.

From the picture, it looks like you have a larger bend radius, than the Motorrad Elektrik bracket, I've got one of their brackets, and it's got a real tight radius, and it looks like the coil is a little farther out, than with the other bracket .

Just curious, if there is any possibility of the coil chaffing on the tank, there's not a lot of extra room under the tank .

Bob, well spotted.  One of the reasons for making my own bracket was the bend radius on the Motorrad Elektrik looked a little too tight for my liking.  When I did a dummy set up, clearance from the outside edge of the coil to the tank with the standard Motorrad Elektrik bracket offset was fine, but I did move the coil in about 1/8” with mine to give some extra help.  That’s about as far as I wanted to go.  The slightly shorter cantilever for the coil has the effect of making the suspension a little stiffer but leaves enough meat in the rest of the bracket so that is it rigid enough overall.

If I had kept the Motorrad Elektrik bracket, I would have glued a short piece of rubber beading on the edge of the bracket which holds the electrical connections above the coil as the clearance there would have been tight.  I just sited the coil a little lower in my set up.

Really, the Motorrad Elektrik would have been fine, but having materials and equipment lying around means that I was able to make something tailored to my situation that might not work as a generic solution.

Ed, if you really want a Lucas story, just let my wife tell you about the Triumph Stag that I owned for 23 miles/46 minutes.
