Engine starter cover
« on: April 25, 2009, 04:55:01 AM »
Just a question following my recent engine breather upgrade:

All documentation I read and web articles suggest the starter cover comes off quite easily once the two allen screws are removed.
I had to remove BOTH halves of the clam shell air filter housing to slide the starter cover out!
Any comments welcomed?

Yep, sounds about right mate. It is possible to 'roll' the starter cover off, towards the left pot however i've never managed it with the electrics in the way!

I pulled the starter cover off my '81 this morning in prep for a timing chain replacement. Air filter cover and filter off, then the two Allen screws. Came away easily. However...

...as my Bings are all shiny and freshly overhauled -plus still sitting on the bench- there was a lot less pieces parts and cables in my way.

Just hold your tongue right and it does come off without stress.

Added: The manual states that it may be necessary to remove ignition coil/s if they interfere with starter cover removal.

PS: Dig the Chuckie eyedrops, Masoon. Funny. Minutiae Moment... Toured the Tabasco factory on Avery Island near New Iberia, Louisiana couple years ago. Tour guide girl -with a way cool Cajun accent- said there biggest foreign buyer is Saudi Arabia. Go figure. They were labeling a production run right then with Japanese-language labels.

If you still have the cover off, look at the edges where it looks like it was contacting the surrounding areas, and remove a little metal with a file, or sandpaper, and it will come off easier next time.
