Total Electric Makeover!
« on: July 24, 2025, 07:13:42 PM »
1980 R65. As I look at what this bike needs, I have decided to update/replace most of the electrics. I just ordered new wiring harness and want to add new coils and electronic ignition. I would appreciate any recommendations on coils and the elec ignition. This site has a lot of info but much of it is over 10 years old. Plz let me know what you think is best for new coils and elec ignition.

I'm not a huge fan of spending mega dollars on electronic ignition as there's nothing much wrong with the stock system when in good order.

If $$$ are to be spent then there should be real benefits which to me would mean a crank triggered system with electronic control of ignition advance together with whatever coils are recommended. That improves on the mechanical advance of the stock system and eliminates any susceptibility to timing chain wear.  Another advantage of a crank triggered system is the stock system can be left in place as a backup.

For what it's worth all I've done is added a points ignition booster built from a £10 kit which has been faultless for over 16 years and is still using the original set of points. It can also be reverted to stock in a few minutes at the side of the road.
