High or low handlebar??
« on: July 14, 2025, 03:29:47 PM »
Hi,

I'd like to start replacing the cables on my 1981 R65. The fische and websites specify differing lengths for "High Bar" vs "Low Bar".
I wasn't aware the R65 had different handlebars (maybe the low bar is for LS?). The fische drawings are too rough for me to tell, and yes, I'm being lazy and not wanting to remove the old cables to measure before ordering new ones. I want to use the old cables to snake the new ones into position.
Attached is a photo of my bike - anyone know the way to tell which bar type I have?

They would appear to be the low bar from what I can see.  A better angle of say 45 or 90 degrees would make it easier for me to see because I cannot see where the bend radius on the bars are.  When comparing to Realoem.com, the high bars should be noticeably higher and quite obvious.  As far as I know they were an option and not original fit.  When you remove the fuel tank, the replacement should be fairly straight forward.  Use a piece of string to measure the current cables to confirm their length.

I am assuming you are using a version of Realoem.com and the diagram for the handlebars.  On that diagram the difference in the two bars shown are quite obvious and there is no confusion to me.  The high bars are more of a sissy bar seen on another brand to show off hairy armpits.

Low bars were fitted for the European market and high bars for the US market and possibly some others.

I have the original low bars and making a comparison with mine the bars in your photo do not look like original low bars. They might not be original high bars either.

One way to check is to measure the overall width because low bars were narrower as well as lower.

Hi Guys
The R65 sold with an RT fairing to increase sales were fitter with a high handlebar making the driving position a bit more vertical for the rider.
Mine had one when I bought it new in 1984 with the fairing and still has after removing the fairing for it's 30 st anniversary.

Thanks Burt, Barry and Georgesgiralt for the feedback so far. I had not been accessing Realoem, but rather the Max's BMW fische, so that was a great resource, thanks Burt.
If I were to look at the bars sans the crash pad, it appears closer to the high bar drawing than the low one, probably a good 5" rise from the clamps. between the pad, clocks and the fact the bar may be rotated down towards the cockpit a bit, it appears lower than it really is.
I'm about to pull the trigger on some "high Bar" cables from Boxer2Valve. I'll report back what I find out.
