BMW Asymmetric foot rests and size 49 Alpinestars....
« on: June 01, 2022, 05:11:19 AM »
I keep catching my boot on the cylinder/ carb bowl / RT fairing lower when changing gear. Tried adjusting the lever up/down/all over and still doing it. So see plan A below!

Now I've been looking at this, not only is the left peg further forward, it's also further inboard than the right. I'm moving the left rest 25mm back and about 5mm out, which is closer and to give room for my boot. Apart from "Purity of design" why did BMW not put both pegs in the rearmost position i.e. the same? Was this an engineering giggle, an error which no-one would admit-to or for some other reason?

I've always thought they did it to match the offset cylinders but it's a fair point to suggest they should both be rear most. The only advantage of having one forward is a little less cramp in one leg.  I do think they could very easily have been made adjustable. I initially found the lack of adjustment frustrating.

Adjustment is simple! Measuring tools and markers, a vice, hacksaw, 100+Amp stick welder, angle grinder with flap and grinding wheels, PPE, various spanners, custom gear linkage, IPA for getting the rubber off/on, some paint, cuddly toy, etc.

I think it's an engineer's idea of a joke myself. Someone with great expectations thinking he is Herr Porsche, Messerschmitt or Daimler and coming up with the peep-toe Wellington boot.

This is the improved situation. Not missed a gear at all today :-)

Weirdly the right peg felt like it was too far forwards when I first tried it with the left peg back an inch!
