Speedometer Repair - Good result

Hi All,

Merry Christmas and happy holiday season to you all. It’s a hot day here so instead of riding thought I might post a good news story about my speedometer. When I bought my R65LS the speedometer wobbled all over the place especially on acceleration. Moreover the trip meter didn’t work, yet the odometer did.

Dropped in to an instrument repairer in the southern suburbs of Sydney and for AUS$120 [about £2 :)] he serviced the speedometer and repaired the trip meter. Apparently the speedometer has a silicon oil filled damper that stops the needle from wobbling; some goose had failed to repack mine when they opened it up. He repacked it and the result is great.

The trip meter was seized with rust, the guy reckons the speedometer has had water in it at some stage. So that was cleaned up too. Anyhow for one-fifth the cost of a new speedometer mine now smoothly increases and the trip meter functions beautifully.

Most of you probably know these facts, but for newbie BMW owners like me I thought I would post this for anyone else who has a poorly performing speedometer.

Best to all,
Paul

That is an exceptional price for a rebuild, I think Palo Alto in $150 USD and up...

I'd be happy for a $150 fix.  I haven't found anyone that will do mine for less than $200.  I may have to give Palo Alto a call.
I keep telling myself that I will pull it off, crack it open and see what I can do, but I haven't had time to mess with it with the seasonal activities.  I can see by the line of epoxy ringing the joint that I would not be the first one in there.
