Side Stand 1980 r65

He Everyone,

I need some help w/some things but only 1 at a time..My son broke the side stand this past summer & I am just now getting around to replacing it but am not 100% sure of the assembly. Would someone mind taking a few Explicit photos of the mechanics of the side stand, all the pieces in there perspective places & emailing them to me? I sure would appreciate it.. ;D

I am replacing the tires this weekend too, just got the rear off & tire off the rim was actually fairly easy but the stiff new tire seems like it might prove a bit tougher, I guess I'll need lots of good lube?? 8-)
 ::)
The front tire will be next.

I was thinking of a spline lube also but  seems like an awful lot of trouble for just a lit bit of grease.  :-/

The grease on the rear hub/drive when I took the wheel off looks rather questionable, definitley needs new grease there but it is exposed to more weather/water/grime than the spline but would the condition of the rear wheel hub grease be any indication of the spline & is it CRITICAL to lube?? Bike has 15500miles on it & would like it to make another 150k. how often should I do the spline lube. I guess after the first time it should get easier?? ::)

To begin:  RealOEM is a website that will allow you to see most assemblies in a more or less exploded view.

This is a link for a R65 built in 1/80: short link

You can type your 7-digit VIN number in the Serial Number field, before you bookmark it, and it will always take you to the appropriate page for your model.  Bookmark it!

Sidestands are under the heading for Frame.  There are 3 different types shown.
You will need to determine which you have by comparing the piece unique to each, which seems to be the plate that it pivots on.

This link will take you to the sidestand page.

Do the spline lube.  Yes, they get easier.

For the first time, do it right and remove the transmission.  You will want to look things over, anyway - clutch, signs of oil leakage, condition of the clutch throwout rod tip (we saw a NASTY one here about a year ago...).  Since yours is a 1980 (thank you for that info), you will also want to check out the throwout bearing assembly, in the back side of the transmission.  If not cared for, that bearing can "self" destruct. (not really, the owner helped ;))

I learned that lesson early in my BMW life, and I bought mine new.  I keep a spare on hand.

Re: the tire changing.  I am no expert, I am 52 and I have yet to change one myself!  But I read, and my most favorite expaination was on a thread on Boxerworks.

"Learned that it's about technique, not muscle. Trick is getting the beads on the side opposite of where you're levering squeezed together into the depression in the center of the rim. Tire lube helps, too. A friend visiting from down under (who ran a MC tire store for 25 years) showed me how to do it, and danged if I didn't change the front with just 3 puny levers (I cheated) in about 30 minutes."

Read through that thread, and see if you don't gain some insight.

I use 2-3 C-clamps to get the beads squeezed down and once they are crammed up in the drop center the other side of the tire will almost "fall" on.
