BMW Technical Q&A, Primarily R65 / Re: missing at higer speeds
« Last post by Happy Eeyore on March 27, 2026, 11:38:18 AM »
I have chased this missing at high speed for a couple of weeks and thought I had solved it several different times.  Thought it was bad fuel.   Thought it was the bean can.  Well for certain it was starved for fuel.  I did a fuel flow and was getting about a gallon every 25 minutes which is way too low.  Today I drained the tank and took out the pet cock and cleaned the junk off the two screens and now she runs like a champ. Inside of the fuel tank looks very good.  Probably the first time the pet cock has been off.  So if you run into this problem check the fuel volume flow rate and save yourself the chase.

BMW Technical Q&A, Primarily R65 / Battery for '79 R65 (AGM)
« Last post by TomHoldom on March 27, 2026, 04:15:01 AM »
Hello,
I'm looking for help recommendation for an AGM battery for my occasionally used 1979 R65
My old AGM battery is dead (after forgetting to leave on trickle charge of winter)

I have seen an Exide AGM12-18 (12V, 18Ah, 250A) recommended which is available where I am (france) for ?65.
Does this look ok? After the size and quality is it only the 12V and 18Ah that I need to check when choosing ?
Thanks for your help.
Tom

BMW Technical Q&A, Primarily R65 / New R65LS Sidestand

Any one tried the new sidestand from EURO MOTOELETRICS. Looks like it might be good so you don't need to reach around the head and not lean so far over.

BMW Technical Q&A, Primarily R65 / Re: Clutch Issue
« Last post by Barry on March 18, 2026, 11:07:25 AM »
The procedure from the manual for a 1980 model is to adjust the cable at the handlebar so that when the handle bar lever is at half travel the clutch operating arm at the back of the gearbox is parallel with the gearbox end casing.  Then use the adjuster at the gearbox end to set 3mm free play at the handle bar lever.  In other words the correct method is the exact opposite of what you might expect but it works.

Clutches are very robust and don't easily wear out so if you still have a problem after correct adjustment suspect the release mechanism which incorporates a radial roller bearing.

Hello,
There is a special procedure to follow to adjust the clutch on the BMW. It is different from the other bikes.
I urge you to search for it and follow it in order to ascertain the clutch is working properly.... Or not.

BMW Technical Q&A, Primarily R65 / Clutch Issue
« Last post by Redbaron on March 17, 2026, 09:01:21 PM »
1980 BMW R65 40k miles. When I pull clutch lever in the clutch barely engages.  I adjusted the lever all the way and also the linkage at the rear of the transmission.  Does this mean the clutch is bad or should I first try to replace the clutch cable?  What would you do?  Thanks for any responses Red

Update on my adventure.
So far rebuilt carbs, ordered new carb cables.
He was going to re-tap the final drive fill hole that was stripped by the previous owner. While the final drive was out he was going to lube the splines, but saw oil behind the clutch. Yep you guessed it rear main seal leaking. 42 year old clutch and 45k on the odometer. Done! Checking out the gear box and yep still had the plastic roller for the shifter. Upgrade gear selector kit with metal roller, springs and clips on the way. Some things are more than I expected but while we're in there might as well do it right. As they say 1 and done.
This is going to be a new bike.

Shame oh Shame but confession about not checking the basics is good.  It was bad fuel..  Dumped the tank sloshing it side to side and added sea foam about 2 oz per gal and the missing cleared right up.  It has been so long since I got bad fuel I did not even consider the possibility.  Rebalanced the carbs.  Temps are about equal. Running sweet now. Burn this after you read it so my shame will not linger.

It is starting to warm up here in North Georgia and we have wonderful roads in all directions dirt or paved, well sort of paved sometimes,.

I would adjust the needles to the setting that Bing recommends .
Check the float adjustment .
Check the fuel line where it enters and exits the airbox I had mine kink and restricted fuel flow .
