General Announcements / Re: Extra final drive
« Last post by Tiedie on July 12, 2026, 09:44:07 AM »
I have a worn 1979 R65 final drive that needs rebuilding. Do you know anyone I can pay to do it? I have too much drive train lash.
Sorry for the late reply I just saw this I'm in WNC the guy I used for all my upgrades and updating is here too. DM me if your in need but as @Tony Smith said it not too difficult as a matter of fact Boxer 2 Valve has a video on how to do it. I haven't attempted it but if you have a hot air gut and patience it shouldn't be too hard. They sell a repair kit for bearings and seals and gaskets.

Question?  Were extra deep oil pans ever added to the R65?  The oil pan on mine looks deeper than the standard pictures I can find.

What year is your R65 ?

The sump capacity increased for the 81 model year onwards but not by much, I think it was only 250cc more oil but more important in my opinion was that half of the extra volume was given over to increased crankcase air space to alleviate issues with crankcase compression.

To identify your pan try here

Ride Reports and Event Reviews / The Long Way to Timmies
« Last post by Quezzie on July 11, 2026, 02:18:49 PM »

Greetings friends and fiends! Welcome to what I?m calling The Long Way To Timmies (working title), in which I rescue my 1983 BMW R65 from storage in Massachusetts and decide it would be way more fun to ride it across Canada than ship it. I?m no stranger to long haul overland travel, but this differs from my previous wanderings in that it?s not open ended?I want to arrive in time for one of my favorite moto events out west, the VME MC?s Isle of Vashon TT.

The proposed route will cover ~8k miles, 6 US states, 9 Canadian provinces, plus a li?l piece of France, over about 50 days.

Stage 1: Nova Scotia. We have 6 players at this stage; me on my 1983 BMW R65, Justin on his 1972 R75/5, Shannon on her Bajaj, Brett on his P200, and Mike on his P200. Elyssa is driving the support truck.

Stage 2: Newfoundland and Labrador. The scooters return home via PEI. Justin and I ferry north and take the recently paved Trans-Labrador highway. Hopefully we can make it back in time for the Rally of Northern Emigration.

Stage 3: The looong stage. Justin returns home and I continue west solo, taking my R65 to its new home in Washington...but not before getting a pic at Mile 0 in Victoria, BC to complement the one I?ll take at St John?s, NL. Wish me luck.

Stage 4: Party! See you at Vashon TT! I wonder if they have Furthest Ridden...

If you?re along the way at all, please say hi!

1980 R65 For Sale
This bike seems to be for parts or "Project Bike".  It has a lot of good parts. I'm no BMW or Motorcycle expert.
Appears to be locked up.  Clean Title. $700.  Seat in very Good Condition. Tank good on outside but will need to be cleaned and sealed. Fenders and wheels in good condition. The bags were not with it. Windshield is included. Pictures should help with identifying other parts. Can send more pics if you want a picture of something in particular. Just let me know.

British Hagon  shocks are on and work well.  The bushings were a tad too long but that is what God created angle grinders for. Bike no longer looks like a low rider.  I will be able to change a rear tire now with relative ease.  I can use the double kick stand also. The soft setting on the shocks feels about right.

Roads in Georgia  Dogshome.  Our state highways are intensely crowded around the entire Metro area of Atlanta.  Our political leaders have done everything possible to attract new people here and it has worked as populations bail out of poorly managed cites in the extreme west, midwest and northeast.  Our roads streets and bridges have not been maintained and our state highways are a crowded mess. Fortunately for me I live near large areas of National Forrests which were set aside in the 1930s and they have lots of great motorcycling roads.  Look up Chattahoochee  BDR X on u tube and watch what I get to ride in everyday.  If some of you are ever this way, let  me know and I will guide you on some great gravel road rides.

Well I couldn't bring myself to cut it up. I took it off and will fabricate a replacement.

Does anyone want it? I'm happy to give it away if you pay shipping. It's got some surface rust, but it works and could be refreshed with a paint job.

Justin.

Have a look at the very top of the welcome page and then at the caret to the right of the "Simple Machines" logo.

Click on it and see what it does.

As regards the admin role - not a chance! I resigned from all office positions in the physical club I am a member of. All I plan on doing now is dabbling here and in Facebook to pass on knowledge and ride my bikes while I still can.

I am selling some of my BMWs and have given my GSA away to someone who will love it and use it.
Next on the downsizing list is my workshop. If there is anyone in Australia interested in buying a pretty complete workshop that includes a lathe, milling machine, shaper, press, bead blaster, compressor and a significant stock of metrology equipment, give me a message. Sale for the lot at around $20k, not interested in breaking it up.

Never heard of "compact headers," so, no!  Maybe we've found the next admin? Sign him up!  :deal2:

OK, y'all, we have had 4 very generous donors step up and the bill is paid so we are covered for a couple more years.
