Update...Had some time to dig in a bit:
Plugs are fouled badly (see Pic) still hoping it is not rings.
Pulled the air box and starter cover and found I had a mouse in the house!! (with his own stash of dog food from the PO)
Pulled Air Box and will be getting rid of the Pure Air setup and plugging with K model drain plugs in head and timing plugs in air box. Breather tube from air box "T" to crank case was shot. All else in pretty good nick.
I had a bit of an epiphany as I am going by the seat of my pants. Do I clean parts as I go, or just work the mechanicals and disassemble a second time to clean later once she is running? Decided to clean as I reassemble. Anyone who knows better please let me know :P

If you are going to replace the crankcase ventilation hose that is in sad shape, here is the page from the parts catalog for the part .

The diagram of the part looks nothing like the actual part, but it is item # 10 on the diagram .
I went through this about 17 years ago when I found the tube on my '81 R65 in pieces .
If the part is still available from BMW . :(

Well, hope no one minds the frequent posts. Wanted to keep up on the progress. Some cleaning done, Pulse out on 1 side of Jug. Right side is stuck in the cylinder jug badly. Soaking with PBB next step is a torch (Bike does not yet run). any tips are appreciated on that one.
Got the exhaust nuts off....Not pretty but didn't need the cutting tool :) new shiny ones in the wings.
Next Valve adjust, Timing, sort out gas tank, and fire her up (I hope)... ::)

Before you put your new exhaust nutz on, clean the threads carefully and apply some anti seize compound. Makes taking them off next time oh so much nicer.

Finally got moving towards the points and into the bean can. Mine is a late 79 (After the factory vacation) so titled as an 80. There were several 1 or 2 year only issues with this model I am learning.
I had something unexpected inside the bean can. Under the cover and behind the support bracket was a "C" clip type thing that made it very tough to set the gap. None of the stuff I had read talked about it, so I moved slowly. It came out easy with some C clip pliers and made it possible to get into gap the points (I think :D)

Also, I didn't snap a photo, but the inside of the front bean can cover was completely covered with what looked like gunk. It was completely covering the inside of the cover so it may have been cork or some kind of material put there intentionally but it has gone to crud and I am wondering if I should remove it, replace it (What with?) or just leave it alone???
Any help is appreciated.

Surprised nobody replied here, maybe you got it answered elsewhere.
I can't give you details on how important but I do know that there was a cork liner on the lid that you are probably seeing.
Seems like I first heard of it on someone's project website and he went to great pains to reproduce it perfectly. But I think he never determined if it actually served a purpose?
Sorry, not much help. But, yes, you are probably correct that you are seeing cork in there.

Thanx BPT, I think I will leave well enough alone for now. Decided to focus on mechanicals then go back over cosmetic stuff later.....living and learning in Maryland :)

I had a computer crash on me and that's where many of my bookmarks and such were, otherwise I'd have a link or two to refer you to.
If you're more curious about the cork thing, you might ask in another area, like the technicalQ&A. It could be that nobody saw this thread.
Coincidentally, I just came across that guy's site again not too long ago. It pips up when I'm Google searching for things but I can't remember the name of it. I'll remember this thread the next time I see it though and post a link.

Scroll down quite a bit and you see a VERY detailed write-up (with photos) on refurb-ing the bean can. Within that is a separate thing just about him re-doing the cork.

I had that liner inside the bean can lid disintegrate too. Not being able to figure out what it was for I cleaned it off without replacement. This is a 10 years back and I'm not aware of any adverse effect now it's missing. Who knows what the material was but it wasn't my impression that it was cork. If it had been would it have disintegrated like that ? I thought at the time it was foam rubber that had been attacked by oil vapour inside the bean can.
I still don't know what it was intended to achieve. If it hadn't been for the outrigger bearing plate then a plausible function might have been electrical insulation but as it is there is no way any wiring could come in contact with it. It's only function seemed to be to absorb oil vapour which it did successfully for a time.
