Ive noticed in various photos some have the adjuster outside facing forward some inside facing back?? which is correct or does it matter. ive put mine forward for ease of access but i cannot remember which way there were when i stripped the bike

I believe 'forward' is the lightest of SPRING PRELOAD setting, which is what this handle is for.
With the handle 'rearward', the springs will be at their stiffest, and least comfortable, but better able to handle heavy loads.
But the bottom line?
If you still have these shocks on youe bike, you need to replace them. They were marginal at best, when they left the factory.
Do a search in this section for "shocks", and you find plenty of suggestions for replacements.

On my particular bike the handles faced inward. Possibly to avoid interference with the factory luggage, passengers legs? I've since replaced the factory shocks with aftermarket units which have a tool, instead of the handle, for adjustment.
