As with many of these stories. It all start on Craigslist. Some kid who didnt know what he had sold me this bike for 1K. Needs a tons of TLC but has compression and most of the parts are there. No keys though? But hey, title in hand so I'm happy. See photos below for my starting point. Thus far I have stripped everything down to bare pieces and have been in process of painting and coating everything (frame, differential, sub-frame, swing arm, engine, engine covers, yadda yadda)
Also replacing every nut, bolt and wavy freaking washer on this guy, soo finding MaxBMW and their parts fiche's very handy.
Semi-Gloss Black frame coating from VHF (used on my Zook and proved to be very durable and way cheaper then powder)
Cast Aluminum color coat for engine and diff
Thinking about black for wheels and some two-tone homage for tank and fenders.
Biggest purchase to date was the new "Peanut" style valve covers (way way better look)
Up next is the Thunderchild Diode and replacing most of the electrical system. Clutch, throw out and fly wheel all surprisingly great. Keeping a single front disc [for now].
Still deciding on seat and rear fender combo to go for. Much more to come!

The luggage rack and rear rack where too badly rusted when it came down to it. So initially not going to replace. But in time, I will buy a new rack, will be better for the long haul rides.

Still coating and painting. Frame coating went on last night and looks sick, pics to come. Tranny got its aluminum cast color.
Need to refurb these rear shocks. Started a thread on the tech forum for how to disassemble, but if someone wants to jump in and just let me know, that would rock!
Tires and tubes are ordered. Wheels will be getting some love soon.

Final order of nuts and bolts today should hopefully be here in a week to begin some re-assembly... still undecided on shocks so will wait for now... Trying to locate some 22mm euro bars that are not 100 bucks...
paint finally going on engine soon as well, had to get my soda blaster fixed to get it cleaned up proper. Brake and fuel lines on order and tires finally arrived!
More pics soon once there is something worth showing.

Well most paint is done and reassembly has begun with a new tank, brake lines, spark lines, gators and more on order!! Also I dont have an LS, so there's that... updated pic below

So exactly where is this rebuild taking place?
Not seeing any oil drips on that creamy carpet. Does Mom, Girlfriend, Wifey know you have a motorcycle in the den?

Too funny. Roomates are fully aware, carpet needs to be replaced anyways so this build was "timely". Best use of our guest bedroom yet. No fluids in the bike at all and everything else has been cleaned thoroughly... although with all the Moly and Lithium I will be using it could get wild... I'll take my chances.
Getting it out of this room will be a multi-shot series I'm sure everyone will enjoy.

Bike is mocked up... everything appears straight. Freshly packed triple tree bearings keeping the turning smooth... On to the carbs!
New tank, clutch cable, misc small parts (o-rings for carbs, random bolts i missed) exhaust head pipes all on their way! Kind of like Christmas for myself.

Figure I would begin polishing while I wait for my rebuild parts...

Carb clean and rebuild complete... decided to paint the body instead of spending a million hours polishing... turned out well I think... No on to cleaning the inside of the new tank and choosing a color theme for tank and fenders... wiring up after that!

Believe it's in the FAQs section, but there is a DIY baking soda blaster that works quite well on cleaning up stained and grubby alloy. You can see the "gun" btm-right in the photo.
The blaster uses grocery store variety baking soda that dissolves in water, making it ideal for carburetor clean up. Rinse and blow out all those tiny passageways. The idea was actually taken from a foreign car repair shop that had to clean up a brace of carbs off some furrin' vehicle.
Here's what a 50-cent box of soda and ten minutes of time did for the fork lower on my '83 R65.
BTW, is that pretty, shiny black paint on the Bing both gasoline and alcohol proof?

oh yes. went for the engine specific paint that is oil/gas/solvent resistant... only downside is when it gets on your hands, it's a hell of a pain to get off.
I soda blasted before painting, looked alright but feel this will tie in better with the overall theme...

Controls are painted and on... It's amazing how crudy the brake side got with crap and old brake fluid sitting for a few years. Good as new now.
Just need a good line on some braided brake lines. [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

Carbs are going onto bike finally. Cutting fuel lines to length. Might have the 'BMW' letters painted in.... not sure yet.

Work has been happening. Brakes have been rebuilt, wiring re-loomed, gauges refurbed and all the little bits and pieces are coming together. [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

Nearing completion. tank and rear cowl are getting paint this week. exhaust is in and just building a hanger for it.

The time is here!
Tank is painted. Sick BMW Motosport emblems are in... Bike is out of the guest room... no cutting required, although much wiggling.
Now the real fun starts. Wonder if it will just fire up, lol. I would be so lucky.

Once the engine is out and separated from the transmission I went through many different methods before finally soda blasting it... Worked very well. From there I prime and painted with high temp engine paint that was the color "Aluminum Cast".
Here is a shot of it finally outside!

Suspect the paint will offer protection from the corrosive salt air while maintaining that factory look. Fine idea.

Actually was dupli-color engine paint in "Aluminum Cast" color... very good scratch resistance and obviously temp and solvent resistant. The whole engine was soda blasted and sprayed including the heads... Darn this Florida salty air, otherwise I might have polished. The carb float and top are bare aluminum polished like crazy, so thats gonna suck to keep shiny

I have several pieces of my engine painted with the same thing, Duplicolor "Aluminum Cast" engine paint. A friend who has a Corvette he takes to shows told me about it. He uses it to keep his aluminum intake manifolds looking like new.
I recently replaced my starter cover/airbox with a one piece fiberglass one from Boxercafe. I sprayed it (from a distance) with a high build primer to get a textured surface then hit it with the Aluminum Cast paint. It looks like it was a cast piece made for the engine.

Thanks for the info guys, i'm currently rebuilding mine also and have a resto build page going. I'm thinking about having the front and top covers powdercoated along with the rocker covers when i get my rims and frame done. I will be looking at painting my engine myself as you have done.

Powder coat is the way to go for longevity. Will check out your build!
