Title: Working on a new seat
Post by: disco51 on May 14, 2014, 05:23:45 PM
Bought a crappy seat off ebay a while ago.  Finally got the seat pan fairly rust free, primed, and painted with some black.

Here was the original seat...

Working on the foam at a local shop who's going to do the upholstery.  This is going to be a second seat… having fun with it.

Thinking of using a dark brown cover.

Got a spare tank and a front fender as well.  Thinking of going black with the dark brown seat.  Parts should be interchangeable - kind of like a set of clothes for the R65.

Progress on the seat...
The upholstery guy did a great job.

Great design with the seat. Room to move fore & aft but still with the posh bum stop.

My '83 R65 arrived with a butt ugly two-toned seat that some PO thought would tie in with the angle of the seat's tail piece. All I could figure.

The tank and tail piece had several coats of many colors; the last being a roller paint job with results as expected... a lovely orange peel effect.

At least it was mechanically well cared for.

Way back then-

Well, here it is on the bike.  Sets up some more work for me to do.  Since I have a 79 bike, the rear cowl on the newer seat goes up at a more defined angle on the rear frame.  Now my tail lights and license plate holder (rear fender removal kit from boxermetal) sit a bit lower than I would like leaving a less than tidy gap.  Since the paint job doesn't match either, it sticks out a bit as well.
More to come...  Thoughts appreciated.

Nice job.  Definitely like the room to scoot back.  I'm looking at reworking a Corbin solo seat to fit my 79.
