Started working on the '87 Guzzi today, after reading through the manufacturers shop manual, they are quite adamant about using a moly additive in the final drive, it's stated that it will overheat if it isn't added to the gear oil .
Anyone ever hear about using this, any pros or cons to this in an airhead application .

Bob, the small block Guzzi's are a class unto themselves. Can't say I've ever seen or read that. So, I pulled out the Guzziology and sure enough, in Chapter 13 under Lubrication there are several paragraphs about adding moly to the rear drive.
Dave Richardson, the author, writes, "...we have found an appropriate additive....made in Seattle, alled Power Punch EP-1." He goes on to say that he uses moly with non-synthetic gear lubes (or Amsoil) in motorcyle rear drives.
Small Guzzi twins like your Lario use 160cc of gear lube and 10cc of Moly, total capacity of 170cc.

I have been using Dow Corning Gear M additive in my 1973 R75/5 as recommended by Oak. It is added to the bevel drive, shaft and transmission (but not crankcase).
It should not be added to synthetic oil. The amount to add is very small; just a few CC's.

Can't see why adding moly could do any harm in a transmission. All the negative vibes about moly were related to it's use in engine oil where it tended to settle out and block filters because moly doesn't dissolve in oil it says as particles in suspension or not as the case may be when it settles out.
If I was going to add it I would ride the bike straight away to make sure the moly was kept in suspension long enough to coat all the metal parts.
We are all great fans of moly on our splines because it works better mixed with grease where it can't settle out.

Use 2% to 3% by volume. I use 2% by volume.
