I wonder if there is any technical reason why Honda Nighthawk shaft drives have the shaft on the left H. S.

It may be because of the direction of rotation of the shaft which will be dictated by the engine /transmission configuration..

RH shaft rotates in the opposite direction to a LH shaft

Most Japanese 4 cylinder bikes have the shaft on the left.  I think it is common because of the direction of normal crankshaft rotation and that they almost all always have the clutch basket assembly on the right side of the gearbox section, output on the left whether it is chain drive or shaft drive.
