i was darn near given a 71 truimph bonneville for $200! it had a terrible hardtail job done it and it is going back to a swinger again. got a OIF frame for it. alot is missing so it is another prime canidate for a cafe bike.

Fun! I frequently wish mine was cafe'd, but it's too close to stock to screw up.

My future son-in-law bought a 70's Trump chop on Feepay last year. After seeing pics of my old Nortons he has been trying in vain for some help with it. Just looking at it makes my leg hurt.
-
Cool.
I'm afraid I have imprinted on the BSA so the Triumph is lost on me. But have fun. I would Keep the hard tail and put a really log girder fork on the front but that is just me.
The OIF frame is actually a really good frame!! It is a copy of the Trackmaster racing frame period 1970. The down tubes are bigger (stiffer) that frame tubes on the Norton Commandos and the massive center tube down the pine of the bike really adds to rigidity. In otherwords it handles really well. On the back of my 1971 Thunderbolt I held my own up in the North Georgia mountains with two late model BMW a Ninja 1000 and an MV1000. One person was amazed at how fast I was on that "old" bike with drum brakes and stock Dunlop K70s.
TTFN,

Right hand shift too! I've got one of those old bolt on hard tail frames too. Keep meaning to do something with it.

Hey Rich that's a "Bobber" with a 1968 or 1969 TLS front brake. Cool. When you going to finish it? 8-)

well my r65 is off ready for paint so its time to play with this little gem.
the engine turned into alittle more than i hoped but thats ok.
the frame has been traded and a new swingarm and front end are in order. the swingarm is a 92 ex500 ninja swingarm that needed some adjustments to use but those where easy.
the front end is from a zx 7 and that will take a little more to make work but again not real bad.

Cool !
I know alot of the 'purists' rather despised the oil-in-frame model chassis but it really is a much stiffer and better handling frame for putting Ninja parts onto it !
I don't know if it is true, but I had heard that the OIF was built for the BSAs, and then Triumph ended up taking the frame from them to put on the Bonneville.
Getting the taller Bonnie engine to fit was a bit of a squeak.

Hi Jon,
Looks like the original "Dove Grey". What color did you use (Incase I decide to do a total resto on the '71 Tbolt.) Time for some spacers on the swing arm.
-
I have a 1971 Triumph frame modified to take an XS650 engine. The seat tubes have been narrowed and the rear hoop shortened and kicked up a bit too.I also have a bare XS650 engine....but that's about all, apart for some odds and sods like a seamless slimline tank, solo pad seat.I intend to make a streettracker out of it,but it's a project that will take a long, long time. However,I know where there is a complete 1972 rolling frame minus engine...that would shorted the build time by a decade. The rolling frame has been offered to me.....I just need to sell another bike to fund it.

Much as I'd like a Trumpy - I can't realistically see it happening....though one of my cousins did - 'til he had it pinched - last seen heading up the freeway towards Victoria going hell for leather >:( ....
However (and I maybe preaching to the converted) here is a slightly different take that I think is quite cool..it's based on a Kwaka W650. From memory they're going for about A$23, 000....

the dove grey is just that, i had got it from work. we get some super size air bombs and there is enough there to do a frame. we dont use it and it was sitting on the selve forever and i asked the owner if i could buy a can. he told me to take what i want.
10 years for this build? i am planning on having this done enough to ride by the end of april. it might not be perfect, i would like to tear down the rims and clean them up but i know i wont have enough time to do that.
i am making the neck this weekend. i picked up a piece of 2.5 x .25 wall tubing for the neck. i have to chuck it up on the lathe and cut out a little for the races to fit in for the neck bearings. once i have the neck done the rest of the frame will come together pretty quick.
i also got a different ex500 swing arm. the first one i had i am going to keep with that oif frame. i was given another oif frame that the had a big crack in the backbone seat tube down by the crossmember. it was welded a bunch of times and looked like chicken scratching so no one wanted it. i cut out the backbone and the rear cross member. the new frame section will be 1 x 2 x .083 req. tubing

Hi Jon,
Man I can just see that brain of yours...you are going to make that a MONO aren't cha?!!
I wish I had half you skill.... :-[

here is a more updated pix
(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi69.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi53%2FP6Customs%2FTrump%2520BBO%252009%2FHPIM0482.jpg&hash=115c5d9c01b2011fca9516d37cbefdda03773505)
and yep, gonna be a mono with a usd front end. i had to make a new neck for it. man its been a while since i had to get that close with a lathe. that neck i am pretty darn proud of. took me three trys to get it right but its done. the rest of the frame will come faster now i have the neck done.
going for a seely/north style frame but with more modern parts hanging on it other than the engine. going to try my hand at making a alum. tank for the petro and oil also along with a alum. seat pan cowl like a cafe seat.

Good freaking grief. Going from an OIF back to a oil tank, and all. Do you have formulas to go by for the steering head angle/wheel base/anything else I don't know about? How the heck do you get all that done?
On a different note, is there an advantage to using the rectangular outline tubing as opposed to round like the factories used?
I'm impressed.
-
it is still going to be a OIF!!
the front end rake will be stock zx636 it is at 27 degrees, wheel base a little longer helps the stablity but not to long so it effects handling, that swingarm looks alot longer but in fact it is 1.5" longer.
the rectanglar tubing is stronger per pound over round tubing. that .083 wall tubing can take me standing on it clamped down to the bench hanging out 4 feet and i weight 280lbs. at 6'3" tall. before i stood on it i had it clamped to the bench and had 180 lb hanging from the end, there was no deflection. it was at 32" above the floor with or without weight. for grins i took a 1.25"x .120 wall round tube clamped to the bench with the same weight. the deflection measured almost 4 inches, with the weight it bent down almost 4 inches, once the weight was removed it moved back almost back to zero but it did have a bend. that is why you see newer sport bikes use rectanglar tubing, it is stronger and lighter as long as the length is in plane with the weight applied.
there is more crossbracing going to help firm it up, if i trusted the casting on the main cases and heads i could hang that engine from the backbone with out having the lower frame rails, so all they are really there for is to hold the engine. i will make a upper engine mount that bolts onto the head to tie the upper and lower together.
has far as learning all this? i have to admit i have gone to school for engineering. i need to go back cuz i am only a couple credits from getting my degree. but i am more afraid that would take me away from leading a great team of guys in the shop and being stuck behind some desk. plus i am the only guy on the floor who has a r-stamp in welding. a r-stamp means i have the proper education and hands on practice to weld on pressure vessels (i weld on propane tanks, the big one you see going down the road behind trucks).
as far as how do i get the time to do that? i have a great wife! bar none. she hates it but understands that is my release from my work, so i get two hours a night to work before my family gets home, once they get home i go into the house and make supper for the family. the weekends i get to also have out in shop but the cool thing is i have helpers! my boys like hanging out there with me.

Lucky man.
-
So Jon. Are you going to put the backbone of the original frame back on? The rectangular bottom provides a lot of the regididy (whatever) in that frame.
Aside - you look like just the guy to make a geodetic frame.
-
So Jon. Are you going to put the backbone of the original frame back on?
nope, gonna use the retanglar tubing as my OIF. the other thought was to make the tank a split compartment, one of fuel and one for oil.
lucky? yep, a great miss and great kids the rest is just icing on the cake
geodetic frame now i have to go look that up ;D
