Title: New wheels to plan for
Post by: mikeyd3 on November 26, 2007, 10:42:26 PM
Ive decided to keep my R65 the way God meant her to be. The same goes for my Triumph, though I had considered swapping the Amals out for Mikunis. (in some eastern religion thats a carnal sin)
Ive been itching for HP. My brothers and freinds Harleys have more than twice the displacement than either of my bikes, but I think theirs have no character. Their Hds look like every other harley on the planet. Both my bikes are a blast to ride and turn heads too. Ive decided to get a third bike before spring. No crotch rocket or like but something meatier than my babies now. Also something I wouldnt feel guilty about altering on a whim either. any suggestions? R100 or +, maybe a k series. or I should throw caution to the wind, second mortgage the house and get next years Rocket III! FUGIT!!!
This wet weather is giving me cabin fever!
Im gonna go watch "The Worlds Fastest Indian" again. Mike

You're looking for something faster than your Trident?  I don't think it will be a stock Harley, anyway!  In '75 Triumph was still winning the Isle of Man production TT, mountain course, on Tridents, which they started doing in 1970.  But you don't want a crotch rocket....

Maybe a fairly recent Dukati Monster?  They're nice looking bikes, and retro-styled, anyway.  Maybe an R100S would outrun your Trident?  I don't know much about the bigger Airheads.  I know a '93 R100GSPD that can't even run away from my R65, but I think they are geared lower than the pure street models.

I'm jealous, I wouldn't mind being in the market for another bike.  But I think a Daytona 675 counts as a crotch rocket.   :o

If you're looking for something fairly fast, but comfortable and able to go 800 miles in a day for not alot of $$, take a look at a lightly used, late model
(post-1996) Kawasaki Concours, though not for the shorter-legged.  Not terribly customizable either, but they are a solid Japanese bike that you can work on  in your own garage too (screw-type/locknut valve adjusters, CV carbs, shaft drive, etc.) or shop for a later model K100RT or RS.

If you're looking for something for more relaxed riding and a little less capable of triple digits speeds, look around for a late 90's or early 2000s model Moto Guzzi - they have old world style and panache, are fairly user-friendly and quirky like airheads, and the cruiser  (California, Jackal) models will still out handle many other V-twin cruiser style bikes in the twisties, and you can bolt on many cruiser type accessories.. even a sidecar - as they have some significant torque to work with !

I've already got my Kawasaki, but my next bike will either be an R100 or a Guzzi as mentioned above, and a sidecar to go along with it.. without giving up the Kawasaki or the R65, if I can help it !!

I vote for R100. Glad I got one.

When it itches ya gotta scratch it!

I had the same itch 3 years ago and scratched it with a R1150R.  Sleek, quick, gobs of torque, carves like a dream, does 650 mile days without complaint (stock seat!) and gets lots of compliments at the gas stations.  Just as easy to work on as the R65 AND gets better gas mileage!  Don't get me wrong, the R65 is still joy to ride too.  Newer K-RS bikes are slick and quick but don't trip my trigger - itchwise.  I couldn't afford the tickets anyway.  I saw a late 90's Duc in the paper a couple of days ago at a great price.... it briefly caught my eye but I quickly looked away and told myself - "No!  Don't even think about it."

It's your itch, you just have to find the right tool to make it go away........ for now. ;)        Happy scratching!
