Title: Ural fans?
Post by: milkman on April 10, 2007, 07:20:13 PM
Any Ura/IMZ fans amongst us?
Anyone whose had actual experience with them good or otherwise.
Seeing as there are parallel boxer fans here and the Ural was a rumoured copy of teh BMW I though we may have some lurking.

I love them in traditional olive drab, but aussie design rules prevent them from being imported to Australia

Would love to ride one across its native land....

I want one...just as an easy way back into sidecaring.

/2 conversion is my first choice.

I had a couple of MZ's (TS 125 & 250 Alpines) as winter runarounds when I was younger and shared a Urinal with chair on it when I was at university. The Urinal was loads of fun but had an awful habit of breaking down which oddly was worth experiencing as when I got my R65 it was like working on a flat twin where everything went together properly with out having to resort to making the parts fit.

That's what the 5 lb coarse and 2.5 lb fine adjustment tools are for!  ;)  I don't think I have personally ever seen any on the road around here but if I could find one for real cheap I sould be very tempted to pick it up and stuff an R100 engine  into it...

I'd love to have one!  They have supposedly made the bike much less prone to breakdown, and have even upgraded the brakes to include disc braking!  And you can't beat the price!

The sidecar with the optional 2 wheel drive looks like great fun.
Ther are some good videos of them playing in the snow, have a look at the Ural Snow Games video

Ah someone else who appreciates precision engineering of the Manchester Spanner persuasion :)

Always wanted to have a shot on a driven chair wheel combo but have never seen one on the road. Must be a pretty odd sensation to ride though as it must be like riding an off center trike.

I'm pretty sure that BMW produced a driven chair for the German Army in WW2 and that the factory that made them was in what became east Germany, and was dismantled and taken to the Ukraine as war reparations to the Soviets .

I usually see a few of them around at the smaller bike rallies here in "new" England, though there are only a couple of distributors within a 5 state region.   They look like alot of fun, too, though as I understand it, if you get one you really want a fairly new/late model one as the
build quality was still "iffy" with alot of sharp edges up until a few years back.

Still, I'd like to try one out for a spell !

Believe it or not, a Ural gathering happens at Willville every summer.  They come in from all over.  I'll find out when they'll be there this year and let 'cha know.  Now these folks are a breed apart (worse than us?  :P).  I've heard Will tell stories about them and their 'survival' tales.  It seems like just keeping them on the road is a challenge that they tackle with great enthusiasm.

Thrang, you are right. There has been a BMW factory in Eisenach, Thuringia. The BMW R35 has been built there before the war. After the war Eisenach belonged to East Germany. The company was re-named into EMW (Eisenacher Motoren Werke). The´ve built the EMW R35 till 1955. Then the factory was dismantled and brought to the Soviet Union - just as you said.
Here are some pics of the EMW R35. Some of them look like real BMWs, but they aren´t:

Well I'll be damned, just when you thought you'd heard it all. :o
Thanks, Rob!

Abbeville's about 60 miles from John, and Willville's only 70 from my house.
Hmmm, wonder if these strange Ural folk allow "regular" riders to come around..... [smiley=wink.gif]

Uh, I thought that some of you folks were planning to be at the BMW rally in wisconsin
on that weekend ?  Maybe this is why the Uralinians chose the same weekend to be
in Virginia ?

Though Virginia is alot closer, I am still planning at this time to get over to Wisconsin.

Loved those Ural Movies... especially the Military sidecar version. I would love one of those complete with machine gun! Thing is, in Switzerland, no one would bat an eyelid. People walk about with assault rifles all the time, probably on their way to some military gig or compulsory target practice. Saw a guy only last week at the railway station. Business suit.... and STG90 over his shoulder. Couple of weeks back I saw 3 rough looking Harley riders and the lead rider had a rifle in a leather holster strapped to his forks and to top that he was dressed in animal skins!! No, I had not been drinking and nor was I under the influence of drugs. My wife was with me and she saw it too. Why don't we ever have a camera when we need one?

Our local March of the Urals, http://uralrallies.com/BURP.htm , is slated to begin at http://www.willvillebikecamp.com/ a week from today.
Friday the 13th. Hmmmmm.

At this point the long range weather forecast is for rain every day, but I'm crossing all fingers and toes and saying a prayer or two.
I really want to go check this scene out! ;)

Aida, the weather forecast is looking much better; yay!
Let me ask, what's the AC power situation at Willville, as far a running chargers, etc (see "Aux. Power" post)?
Thanks much, and hopefully we'll see you there!

SC John? VA Steve? Rob? Anyone else??
C'mon it's Urals, dammit, legions of 'em!!

Steve,

Will has 2 power outlets available in the campground and of course, power in the bathhouse.  It's first come, first serve out in the campground, no additional charge, just a convenience.  We use it during cold weather for an electric blanket!

We're heading out this morning.  Hope to see you there!   [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

I don't see how he is keeping the GPSr mounted, either!

Title: Re: Ural fans?

I can't explain the GPS mounting: I believe it's one of those strange, ritualistic, Ural PFM things. Or maybe velcro.

But, the 4 round black things the individual gauges are mounted in? The owner said he was at the hardware store in the plumbing dept., looking at PVC pipe that he planned to angle cut, paint and then somehow mount up under his fairing, although quite how, he wasn't sure. Upon glancing down the aisle while scratching his head, deep in thought, he said he noticed the old fashioned, $1 toilet tank floats.

"Hmmmm", he thinks, "already round, already black, waterproof, and cheap! If I cut one wrong, it only costs me a buck!"
Four dollars later, some scrap steel bar, and voila, a custom one-off "dash", fit for a Russian King!

May be a little late but I'll put my two cents in.  I have an '03 Ural Tourist the first year of the 750cc motor and the front disc brake.  It is a ton of fun,  the high points is the robust electrical system (35 amps).  I have a pair of running lights and outlets for two vests on the rig and never have a problem with problems of a low battery.  It starts enstusiasticly in below zero weather.  The really cool thing about Urals is the reverse which is standard on all rigs.  The stuff that I can grip about is the weird crude wiring which seems to work okay.  I have replaced a few wires with larger guage wire and in line fuses.  I have the running lights and the vests running off an auxiliary fuse box.  The '07's have a newer wiring harness that looks great along with a Japanese alternator.  This is a one wheel drive and is not worth much in snow or mud.  That rear wheel just spins away.  The two wheel drive models are supposed to be better.  The new tranny's have helical gears whereas mine has straight cut gears.  The new ones shift A LOT smoother.  There is even rumor of a fuel-injected motor in the future.  So I guess old ones are okay but the new ones are great.  jep
