Title: Autonomous Vehicles
Post by: Bob_Roller on October 22, 2016, 11:19:47 AM
Google has been testing their self driving cars, actually Lexus SUV's, since January in my area .

Talked with a few of the drivers when I see them on the street that I live on .

There's still issues, but they've worked out most of the major problems .

I still don't feel too comfortable when I'm around them on one of my motorcycles . :(

Hopefully they can see better than humans.

Anyone know whats driving the development of these vehicles? It's sure not me and I haven't heard any of my friends and neighbors complaining about steering their own cars. Maybe Google and Tesla think they can sell them to the millennials.

Think of this if every vehicle on the road was traveling at the same speed we would be able to fit more vehicles on the current road. Robots don't suffer road rage.
You won't need to find that scarce parking space your vehicle will let you off and go away and find space somewhere else and when you want it you just call it up.
You won't need a car you just call one up and it drops you off then does the same for someone else, when its time to go you get the next available car to take you home.
That is just a start.

They are trying to take ' weak link ' out of the equation . ;D

I work as an aircraft mechanic for an airline, been doing this since 1976 .

The latest generation commercial aircraft, will fly themselves, if the correct information is programmed into the aircraft computers .

It's gotten to the point that we now have a generation of commercial airline pilots that are really disconnected from the aircraft . :o

none of that is appealing to me............... there must be someone to sell it to that is driving the development.... no one is going to develop something if there is no one to sell it to............. could be I'm just a Dinosaur and all the younger crowd are clamoring for it...... if someone is spending money there must be a market. Could be all Gov funding, they are pretty good at developing things that I neither want or asked for

Truth is car manufacturers already think they know best with modern cars having potentially unreliable gadgets that do little to enhance the driving experience except perhaps for the bone idle.

For example I didn't ask for any of these:

Keyless go - an absolute boon to car thieves. They pick up the signal from the key in your house and then steal the car from your drive.

Electronic oil level gauge and no dipstick provided - it simply doesn't work reliably and is just too much fuss to use. Result - ebay does a roaring trade in dipsticks.

Electronic steering locks in prestige cars that contain a 10c motor that's guaranteed to fail and cost $1000+   to repair.   I'm all for technology that enhances the product and works reliably but designing cars to fail expensively is madness.

I think we are about to enter an era where vehicles are considered to be just transport with no character and no engagement with the driver.  At least they won't easily be able to build autonomous motorcycles. If they did I sure won't be riding one.
