Well, LRB "lent" his old National Cycle Universal windscreen to the new twin F650GS for the summer. Well, guess what happened to it! :o
Anyhow, I will need to get a replacement and I still want to stick to something that will fit over the LS's small original fairing and comes on/off easily. I never made note of the originals model number so which National Cycle (or is it Ztecknic) screen would I order??? I think I may have had a universal one from NC but not sure. It came off in about 10 seconds! If I ride LRB next summer over long distances I would like a windscreen. What do I mean "IF"!!!!
I hate to admit it but that new twin F650GS also "borrowed" LRB's passenger footrests for the front bashplate where I could rest my legs over the long haul. They were gerryrigged on there. Got used ones coming from Re-Cycle BMW parts!
Anyone ever thought of getting the Iverson Rack to carry gear on their LS? www.iversonscandinavian.com I don't know if it would"clear" the rear cowling in the LS but I assume so. Because he claims one can take it off quickly it would seem OK but it looks a bit large. Also I would never want to load it up like his internet site shows :o I find that strapping gear onto LRB a bit distressing as it can rub the paint so easily so I use sheepskin pieces to try and protect the paint. Thought this might solve the problem of rubbed paint. Any thoughts??
BTW all the new stuff I have to buy will be smaller and lighter than before...new rule!

Sue, you are starting to remind me of that old saying, "If I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all!" Check out http://www.slipstreamer.com/ and see if there is something you like. I have a Slipstreamer S-08 on my "nekkid" R100 and it's just right. I don't think the S-o8 would fit over an LS snout but there are some similar ones that probably would. My S-08 was something like $80...
-
Is there an online place to purchase a slip stream in the US - did not find one in the slipstream site dealer locator?
-
Te place where I bought mine from doesn't appear to exist anymore. :P
Try here: http://www.powersportsuperstore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TR55-9232&Click=6154
Dennis Kirk carries them: http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/cmn/prodlist.jsp?store=Main&catId=405&np=&brandId=698
I would have thought the Slipstreamer site would have had a dealer locator tab...

Meyer universal windscreen from JC Whitney fits OK. A little short for me but it was of some help and the price makes it a throw away.

And it even looks like it can fit with euro bars, too !
I'd consider getting one of those too, 'cept my head has to go where the windshield is. ;D
-
Sue,
We have a couple of unused windscreens up in the attic. I think I have one of those National Cycle windshields you lost. Steve gave one of the Meyer(?) screens to Graham to use, but I'm not sure it's just what he wants yet. I'll check tomorrow and see what's up there and let you know.
-
Good news Aïda (boy I remembered how to do that"i" thing, yahoo!) Thanks so much for the looking and the offer!!!! Anyhow, if your screen happens to be not right then I see I have some good alternatives The Meyer sounds good and may be a good height for me! The Slipstreamer will need looking at too. Thanks everyone!!
So If all the luck was bad...then I get some good luck coming up, right, Justin?? Therapist pretty happy with my arm movement and the neck will soon be spinning like Linda Blair!!!! Been on my bicycle for the balance aspect and can now feel good about lifting the left hand to scratch my nose or adjust the mirror. It's a great start so by next Spring I'll be ready for "riding over the Falls on a tightrope"!!!
-
I was wondering Rich if the Meyer (Maier?)windscreen mountings allow one to pivot the angle of the windscreen to a flatter OR more upright position depending upon the wind?? Thanks.
-
Got some good news and some bad news... I couldn't find the National Cycle windshield I used to have - just a plexi2 which I'm sure is too big for what you need. Graham doesn't even remember it, so that's how long it's been. I may have had in on my Yamaha, but I don't know where it got off to. I did find a link to one that MIGHT be the same one, or at least it's very similar.....

On the other hand, we do have the Meyer windscreen that Steve so graciously let Graham try. He is not going to use it, so that is an option for you. It is adjustable for angle like the National Cycle was, too. It comes on and off quite easily as well. I think some of the hardware is not original, but it all works. Let me know what you think. If you want pictures I can do that as well.
Just noticed your new signature line...
well cooked 2008 F650GS 800cc twin in ash grey!!
I LOVE IT! :D
-
Sue, your "luck account" is definitely due a hefty deposit of the good variety so I'm hoping you're heading back "into the black", so to speak! ;)
-
Sue.... STAY AWAY FROM THE FALLS!
Hey, How'd ya do aida's "i" thing?? (umlaut?)

Aida, I'm glad you posted this, as I saw Sue's notes yesterday and immediately thought about that screen. Actually, it's identical to the one that Rich posted a pic of above on his own LS, I do believe. Good ol' Maier screen from JC Whitney, although they're also sold elsewhere.
If Graham's not interested in or able to use that shield, I'm all for donating it to Sue's cause.
I didn't want to speak up out of hand, 'cause it's yours now, but I didn't think he was using it.
We got to keep these things in the fold and all, ya know... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
ps: here's a link to that actual shield...

Shhh, I'll tell you my secret - I cut-and-paste... ::)
Sue, this is the Slipstreamer that was on my Virago. The cutout may lend itself to the snout on an LS nicely as the virago had a large rectangular headlight.
-
Hey, How'd ya do aida's "i" thing?? (umlaut?)
Ed,
Yes, it's an umlaut and as well as Justin's way, you can hold down the Alt key and type 139 (using the numpad - it doesn't work with the numbers above the letters) to get the ï . One other way is to use the "Run" option and type in "charmap.exe". It will give you lots of different characters and you can copy and paste from there.
I use the Alt139 myself.
-
Hi there ,
Yup, I use the Alt139 too and was proud I remembered how to do it!! So I would be very happy to get the Meyer windscreen Aïda and I am very happy to pay you for it too!! So you guys think it will fit LRB oK? Doesn't have to be perfect. Just something to hide behind in the wind and will clear the quarter fairing on the LS and can be removed quickly when another LS comes into view and LRB wants to strut his stuff!! ;) I'm thinking that it may cost a bit to ship here and just maybe I should Come down there and try it out!! I know, it's a long way to go naked but then I could go pretty slow and avoid the Interstates. I would aim right for the Blue Ridge and go sometime just ahead of the National Rally in Johnson City. next July. Maybe we could ride to the big Rally together??! You guys could whistle along the way to keep me awake :-[ LOL!...but then that NC area is so beautiful and busy that it is pretty hard to doze off! Flat it aint!!! ;)
Thank you Justin for the luck wish!!! I have had a very lucky life really.....I guess a lot of people figure I was lucky to get out of this last BLIP alive.
-
They are confusing luck with grit and fortitude! ;)

Sue,
The Maier can be adjusted for angle and I do remember someone here made themselves longer brackets to aid in installation on the euro bars.I have the US bars and used the provided hardware. If you do order one get the larger size bar mounts. The smaller bar mounts won't fit. A couple wraps of rubber tape or a strip of old inner tube take up the slack nicely and protect your bars from scratches to boot!

Sue,
I'll look into the cost to get it shipped to you. I guess you really won't need it until next year, though, will you?

I guess this one has the standard bar mounts. Wonder if you can order up just the longer bar mounts? I like the advice to protect you bars, rich!

I like that S-08. That's just what I've been looking for! And there is a dealer right here in town that carries the Slipstreamer. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] They've changed quite a bit since I first started going to them and they are more all kinds of power sports and not so much motorcycles it seems. But if they have this, that would be perfect if it will fit right around the headlight. What do you think, Justin?
Oh, and they are more like $109 now (sigh). I guess everything's gone up. But that's still not bad.
-
I have the US bars so that is one hurdle down. The BMW bars I think were slightly larger than 7/8" the usual small size. If I remember correctly I think they are really 22mm. So that is why a larger bar size is necessary I assume and good ol' inner tubing will take up the slack. Do you ever notice how it is harder to come by old inner tubing now on the roads? I still have one but now I'm keeping the bicycle inner tubing! I check out the Maier site to see if the larger brackets are available separately.
-
I would would say this is exactly what I had for LRB: I got a good settlement Aïda...so the cost of shipping is OK for me. I say send the one along and I'll send you money. If it doesn't work out I'll bring it with me south next summer! Then we can find someone else who needs it!!! Then I will know if I should order the one below if all else fails. Whohoo..I'm actually making a decision...now that is a big deal!!! When I take the $$$ aspect out of an equation, it all seems so much easier to decide things!

Sue, I had this screen mounted on my '84 R65, and Graham put it on his R100, so I don't think you'll have any issues with the 7/8" vs. 22 mm thing.
SC John had one on his bike at a point too, as did Rob on his '79.
Glad to see it's apparently going to a good new home! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
ps: You're not replacing your F650GS, I take it?
Going over to the local dealer's tomorrow to check out the F800GS, which finally arrived here.
Please say a little prayer for me that I don't do anything stupid while there... :-?
-
Melena,
The S-08 fits around the large headlight loosely, not realy a "form-fit" so I don't thi9nk it would look too out of place. Here it is on my '81 R100, it's the "smoke" version which is very little smoke but you can tell it if it's placed next to a "clear" one...

Hope they have one of the yellow/black ones there. It's the best! Reminds me of the old bumblebee R80GS. [smiley=beehive.gif] We have a half dozen or more now. Once they started coming in, they just KEEP coming! We have a few of the F650GSs as well. I can actually reach the ground on the lower chassis with the lower seat...
Sue - first I have to find a box/packing material, then we'll work on sending it out. I'll let you know when I get it shipped. It's nice not having to think about the $$ aspect, isn't it?

I like that. That does look like just what I'm looking for. It looks like it would be perfect in the cooler weather along the Coastal Hwy 1 and when I'm blasting across the Valley on the way to the Sierra, or up Hwy 101 towards Oregon. 8-) Thanks for the picture, Justin!
Sue, looks like I'm looking for a Windscreen for Little Bee! ;D
-
I'm getting confused a bit here....if the windscreen is what Melena needs, Aïda, then I think she should get it from yours and Graham's stash!! Melena suffered becuase she didn't get to ride this summer at all....I pale in comparison...at least I went out doing what I love to do!!!
And Steve, I haven't decided yet whether to replace the F650GS twim but from my intial reading of other bike's specs it seems hard to beat!!! Other than the need for a tip-over sensor!! Honestly, it has the weight issue down , the height issue solved, the gas mileage is unreal, it packs up really well, the torque curve is good in comparison to the F800GS. So only if I accerlerate passing at 70mph. will I see the extra mph of the 800cc. model. Ya get an extra $3500.00 to sepnd on extra aftermarket stuff is ya get the 650cc. The only thing I like better about the 800cc is the colour of black/yellow! The red did not look like a match for LRB!

Sue,
Don't get confused. The windscreen Aïda has will fit on LRB. The one I want is like the one Justin has on his R100 - the Slipstreamer S-08, or one similar. There's a dealer here in town that carries this brand, so I can get one from them - no shipping costs that way ;) .
-
So after Aïda gets back from Willville this weekend which is also our Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, the two of us should get talking about how the windshield can get itself up north here.
I am not confused..I am not confused...do ya think repetition helps any Melena???
-
Hey Sue,
Haven't forgotten you and you are NOT confused! It will definitely be coming your way. . . I'm still looking for a box that it will fit in. Even with all the boxes that come into the store, haven't found one yet. Graham has picked out a larger box that we will try to cut down to size and see if we can make it work. I figured you wouldn't really NEED it until spring, so I wasn't rushing the process.
I'll let you know when I get it packed up and ready to go.
-
Been away for a day or two and actually ordered a replacement helmet here in Canada (Vemar Jiano Bluetooth...trying to think ahead!). I hope it's the right one when it comes! Aïda you are so right that there is absolutely no hurry for the windscreen. LRB won't be going anywhere until next Spring. He rides on trailers lately over to the mechanics 3.5 hours away and I hope he gets back home before snow comes and the salty roads. I am suppose to call today so there is plenty time before snow I would hope. Still very nice for Fall here!
P.S. I wonder if Rob V. keeps making typing errors too?? Then has to go back and fix 'em up!
