Title: Independence, or Unity?

I was just wondering what our friends in the UK were thinking about the upcoming vote in Scotland?

I personally think, although having your own country with your own culture has advantages - I gotta think that the population of the country isn't enough to carry the jobs and economic activity that would have to be duplicated in Scotland if it really did decide to go independent - not to mention all the other economic fallout around the rest of the UK.

Scotland should stay in the union. It probably will not due to ancient sentiment.

100km to the north of me is the long abandoned "home rule" mine - established to raise money for an independent Scotland over 100 years ago.

Speaking as an 'Englishman' with Scottish roots, I don't have an opinion either way.

The issue is that the politicians either don't or won't tell the truth so how can ordinary people make an informed choice?

Looking ahead, if it is the wrong thing to go independent then big problems are just over the horizon as the world is a very different place post 2008

Scotland can and does have an identity without needing to be totally independent. Same goes for Wales and Northern Ireland. Do not the states of USA have an identity without being completely independent ?

If independence happens it's going to cost billions and nobody will be better off except the lawyers.

From a stateside point of view................ I've always thought of Scotland as  totally independent even though there was some over sight somehow from England in the back of my mind. Never have I thought of Scotland as just part of GB..........(I'm not clear on the relationship even now)

The only time it was brought out to me here in the states(newspaper) was when the Irish started kill'n each other years ago and the Brits showed up with tanks and it seems both sides hated them for it

I'm 1/4 Scottish, living in England and appalled that it's come to this. The outcome is currently described, by many 'experts'  as too close to call !!
If Scotland becomes independant it'll be a small but affordable expense for the English a huge and totally unaffordable expense for the Scots.

If Scotland becomes independant it'll be inconvenient, expensive, but affordable  for the English. Judging from the number of big companies (employers and tax payers) preparing to move business south of the border and the content of presentations by political leaders for independance, I fear the Scots are in great danger of economic and social disaster.
