Title: 70,s Nostalgia
Post by: Lucky_Lou on January 04, 2014, 04:48:36 PM
Further to my old Honda bike thread I wondered if anyone else had any nostalgic 70,s pictures here is one of me in my merchant Navy days, an Engineering officer with BP Tankers, BP at that time was 80% government owned and as such we were heavily involved with military support and often went on joint manoeuvres with the NATO fleet often tying up with the US navy on fleet support (refuelling mostly) taking part in external ops as well. The ship I am on in the picture was the "British Dragoon"
We also acted as a convoy target for subs in war games and a refuelling tanker when needed and tested some hi tech anti mine "Degaussing" equipment.

I was with US the battle group in the South China Sea as Vietnam was being evacuated.
The scariest moment was in Luanda (Angola) when the rebels took over and we came under fire as we made a hasty exit from the harbour
I was also in Mosambeque when that kicked off.

So what tattoos or ear piercings did you get?   Sounds like you've crossed around the horn and the equator, maybe the arctic & antarctic circles, too?

I have to say tattoos are my pet hate I turned  down many dates when younger due to my dislike of them.... when my daughter was about 16 she discussed the possibility of an eyebrow piercing, I told her to pack here bags if she did.
I can live with ear rings  but I have no desire to let anyone stick anything in my body that I don't need........
For a single man it was a great adventure but came to an end when I met my wife, I have never been in the Artic unless you count Norway but crossed the line many times.
Some counties I visited off the top of my head (either lay over or shore leave) I leave out all the Gulf Oil States and Europe as I visited most of them with ports.
Angola, Australia,  Borneo, Ceylon(as it was then), Congo , Egypt, Japan, Kenya, India, New Zealand, Nigeria,  Singapore, South Africa, Sicily, Turkey ......etc.

Ps favourite place was NZ, the nurses in Dunedin were very... very nice, when we docked and the telephone land line was connected the first incoming call was an invite to a party at the nurses accommodation block..... I was there for 3 days.....my shore leave timing was perfect

Trying to find the Acropolis photo (it will turn up) I found this one, perhaps one of our Texas members can remind me of where it is ? I think it may be Houston but I am not sure.
