Title: Why daylight savings time?
Post by: montmil on March 10, 2013, 09:06:10 AM
The Standard Time Act of 1918 was a contentious idea even when first enacted. Repealed in 1919, it was brought back to life during WWII from 1942-45.

In 1965, the Uniform Time Act "standardized" the beginning and ending dates; even though the dates sort of meandered a bit until the Energy Policy Act of 2005 set our current "Spring forward-Fall back" dates.

We have moved from a largely agrarian society to today's mostly urban society where our days are simply part of the 24-hour day, 365-day year of everyday life. No longer does the Sun dictate when we start or end the workday.

I am sure that nothing will become of this, my annual rant against Daylight Savings Time but The Act no longer has the impact that it did more than a century ago.

PS: Don't forget to set your clocks forward (or is it back) today, Sunday 10 March 2013. Either direction, have a good one.

The state of Aridzona does not observe DST, except for the Navajo/Hopi nation in the northeastern part of the state .

In my opinion it is a total waste of time and effort. Just another means for the "gubmint" to try and keep everyone confused. My ex was from the area in Indiana where her side of the street was in daylight savings time yet across the street was in standard time. You can't get more ridiculous than that.

If I'm repeating myself just say so.  I had a lecturer who had the classroom clock rigged to operate backwards.  It was tricky telling time at first, but by the time the 16 week course was over, it became second nature.

Lets all use G.M.T..

GMT? Shoot, Air4... When I was a working stiff, I'd get beat on by the admin ladies for using military 24-hour times and the "correct" way to write the date in my required reports.

"Why can't you do it like everybody else?"

Talk about motivation to carry on... ;D Only person that never bitched was my capo di capo tutti; a former US Marine officer.

GMT. I love it, man. A brother trouble-maker. [smiley=beer.gif]

And this rant is from a guy that doesn't even wear a watch.  Good on ya Monte!  I've worked in the international arena for so long that I've adopted the international method of writing the date, i.e. day of the month, month, year.  Makes a whole lot more sense to me.  Now if you really want to get confused, try reading a binary clock.

My wife, who is a card carrying IT uber nerd, keeps one in her office.

What with Air4life wanting GMT and Bengt able to tell the date correctly i am beginning to think there is hope for our Colonial cousins.
Please tell me you still sell beer in pints. [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Lou, hate to disappoint but at most venues the standard glass is 12 fluid oz.  If you go to a wannabe Irish/English pub you can find the pint glasses.  I find the pint to be the perfect size.  12 oz is to small and the 24oz is too much.  Either way the outcome is the same, you're just renting it not buying. A full pint would be too much to expect. A pound of coffee is now only 12 OZ.

Mont,

Speak to your wife and she will tell you that it is an hour less sunshine on the curtains.  That way she saves money by not replacing them as often.   She may even let you spend that saving on beer.  Simple stuff.   [smiley=laugh.gif]

Burt.
