Pushrod tubes replaces, new gaskets in, valves adjusted, points set.....but I can't seem to get rid of a popping on the overrun from the left hand exhaust. The left carb is more dificult to set up than the right. Is an overhaul in order? Any other avenues I should check before carb surgery?

I had this problem some time back,i found the mixture was to lean, after carb adjustment it was fine,no popping at all,and still the same to date.

For what it's worth, a trusted BMW-riding buddy and a wrench for a North Dallas rice dealer shared with me that my "popping" could be caused by air leaks in the multiple-jointed R65 exhaust system. Heavan knows I've got a tad o' rust around a couple exhaust clamps!
Excess air and a hot exhaust could possibly create a faux lean mixture and contribute to the racy throttle roll off music. I actually think it's all part of riding a "classic".
