Title: Boring Statistics About This Site
Post by: Bob_Roller on September 06, 2012, 03:21:49 PM
Had nothing to do today at work, doesn't happen that often .

One of our members here ( Peter Trolle) brought up a statistic about a site he belonged to, about 10 members were keeping the site 'alive '

So I decided to see what kind of activity we had here at R65.org .

I did this by postings per person .

The top 15 members posted 57% of the current number of postings here .

The next 16-30 members posted 12% .

The next 31-45 members posted 6.5% .

The next 46-60 members posted 4.4% .

18% (109) of the registered members has yet to make a posting .

21% (130) of the members haven't been active in 365 days or longer .

15% (90) of the members haven't been active in 180-364 days .

13% (79) of the members haven't been active in 90-179 days .

6% (33) of the members haven't been active in 60-89 days .

7% (39) of the members haven't been active in 30-59 days .

55% of the members haven't been active in at least 60 days .

Interesting factoids. Not boring.

I do notice that there are frequently a couple dozen "guests" on board at most any time. Unless this is a site anomaly, there are numerous lurkers among us. Perhaps they simply choose to gather information on the QT and not offer their thanks to those that do contribute.

Well, I for one want to be counted as being highly appreciative of this joint.  I'd like to contribute more substantive questions/insights here, but my slightly older than 1 year old (to me) and 14K miles later blue '83, has left me without much to talk about.

I do have a list of to do items building, and this along with some other well known sites will be utilized.

One complaint I do have is that I find searching for topics difficult.  Difficult in that I don't retrieve sufficient results.  Maybe I'm not performing it correctly and need to read the instructions for this specific "search" feature.

Members with benefits:  Some forums I've frequented in the past gave limited access to those who wish to stay "guest" only.

Well, looks like we're doing better than that other site.  I'm not sure where I fit in on this as I did take a couple of breaks in the last couple of years.

Don't let that stop you from posting.   ;D  Other people don't.   ;)

I don't have much to say about my bike these days either (now that I got the brakes fixed anyway  :-[ ) .  She's a good runner for sure.  Our 1983 R65's are great.    [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Tell us about the rides you've taken or that you want to take.  I'd like to hear the story about that picture you posted.  That looks like an amazing ride.

Everyone should feel free to post as none of us are right 100% of the time. That being the case if someone posts something that is plain wrong then feel free to post an alternative view as long as it's not done in an adversarial manner. We sometimes don't do that out of politeness and concern for the poster. But if we don't question we don't learn and we also have a duty to the forum.

On the subject of lurking I guess I do some of that because I follow several other forums without being a very regular poster on them. I do post occasionally if I feel I can make a contribution without stepping on anyone's toes.  The exception is BMW M.O.A where I sign in just so it displays the correct UK time but I can't post or see images.

It's interesting to watch the fortunes of various forums which ebb and flow in usage and quality as members come and go. The loss of even a controversial member is not always a good thing if the debates go flat. In the long run forums only thrive if there is a regular influx of new members.

Probably fair to say the R65 forum has been more consistent than most over the years.

I'm not sure just were I fit into the statistics. I check this site everyday but don't always log in. I moderate a couple of tech support chats at work and don't always have a lot of time to login. Usually I will browse what has been posted and if I feel I have something informative to contibute then I will login and post it.

At least for me, it is sometimes easier to follow the information trail if there is "clutter". Not always. Sometimes it is just downright enjoyable to follow along with the wanderings that some of the threads take.

Either way, I have learned a lot, enjoyed the comaraderie of the forum, and feel supremely comfortable posting my thoughts and ideas when I feel like doing it. This is by far one of the best forums I have been a member of.

Agree with you there, Air4.

Our "search" feature has never worked well for me either. Some of the guys, like Bob Roller, New Hamp Mike and a couple others seem to be able to pull up older threads with a snap of their fingers.

I salute these computer mavens among us. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Wish I had something like their skill sets but I just pain along...

All I can say is that I feel honored to be part of these boring statistics.  This is my favorite bike.  If they were making them once again I'm sure I'd pissing off the sales people at Metuchen BMW with my stingy negotiating skills.  '...oh crap, here comes that delusional little guy again.' True story.

Melena: That picture is of a brief trip I took from Moab, UT - specifically the parking lot of Arches National Park to the Valley of the Gods.  It was god awful hot and I'm lucky I didn't break down there.  Ironically enough, when I returned to the home base (cargo van) I was greeted by a deflating rear tire on the van.  I consider myself lucky that day. If i had broken down out there in the valley of the gods I surely would have had to endure some real physical pain.  Its that lonely, and yes that very hot.

I still fared better than this elk who the department of agriculture had sequestered for a necropsy.  It died a slow death as told by the officer.  I guess I was lucky.

Now that's what I like to hear!  A good story to go with the picture.   ;D  I love the pictures too.

I've never been to that part of the country, but I know it gets HOT there.  It's something I would do in the winter for sure, especially now that I've heard your story and seen the picture of that elk.    :o

I should post just to up my statistics...I lurk more than post these days.
Haven't been riding much and that is spread between 3 bikes.  The BMW is still my favorite.   [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

That's my input for the month.   ::)

When I am in administrative mode here, I can see the IP addresses of the 'guests', this morning I checked the addresses, as there were over 30 'guests' here .

There were IP addresses were the same, except for the last two digits, and they were in a range of 35 numbers .

I can only surmise, that 'spambots' are attemptng another 'overthrow', like what happened six years ago, when we were 'spammed' back to the 'stoneage' !!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

though I'm not completely computer illiterate, I might feel more comfortable then.

There has been a large number of "guests" for some time. The number had always interested me as I didn't think there was that that many people that gave a hoot about our bikes that were NON members.

Can you get a "fix" on those IP's? Let's go knock on their door............
Title: Re: Boring Statistics About This Site

I just did a quick check of 'guests' that have been on this site in the last 100 minutes .

The IP addresses that come up, 180.75.5.00, -.255 and 180.76.5.00 -.240 .

Have come up about 200 times in 100 minutes, obviously not your average 'lurkers' .

I did an IP address search and this is what I came up with, the IP addresses : 180.76.5.00-240 are from China, the IP addresses 180.75.5.00-255 are from Malaysia .

There's a surprise !!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So spammers/spambots are alive and well here !!!!!

So it looks like 99.999999999999% of our 'guests' are spammers .

Let the target practice begin :  [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=rifle.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif] [smiley=shoot.gif]

a little far away yo "knock on their door".  Maybe it's time to "sign up to get in". If 99% of the guests are from the far East, you would only be inconveniencing 1 %, could be a small price to pay if these guys are malicious.

The new procedure to become a member, is to send an email to the site administrator, Justin B., he makes the call on whether access is granted or not .

I don't know if Justin can get an IP address from an email or not, may be another way to prevent spammers from gaining access to this site again .

I have the ability along with nhmaf, to delete and ban members and I'm not scared to do it, if they appear to be suspicious !

I plugged these IP addresses into a 'blacklisted' IP address list, and they all come up as being blacklisted by numerous reporting agencies .

I am not at all surprised that most of your recent "guest"/spammer check came up in China - it seems that alot of the spammer business moved there after some major busts in the US and in Eastern Europe.

I visit some other forums which are electronics-oriented, and they do not use the simple, old-school method that Justin/we have here for being added to the forum and thus able to post.   Because those other websites still use an automated method for adding users, the spambots are taking over the forum - greatly reducing the value and clarity/usefulness to almost nil.   The spambots continuously login to the forum and wait for any new thread to be started or a reply to an existing thread to appear - that is the trigger which causes them to initiate a post on the same thread with some totally bogus advertisement or scam.   The admin folks eventually kill the spambot account, but as they haven't changed their policy, another spambot just connects and creates a new userid, and the cycle repeats.    The spambots are like a swarm of mosquitos buzzing against your screen-door, looking for any hole they can fly through even if they get swatted after their first "bite".

I like our approach better - you still see the mosquitos trying, but we manage to keep the majority of them out.

Once these spambots are identified by forum agents, couldn't they be easily outed to a higher authority, those in a position to disable them for good?   I assume they'd just keep making more spambots, but at least it would slow them some.

Anyway, I don't get what the desire is in creating these imaginative-less posts of theirs.   Well, all is not lost, at least they gave me something to up my new profile post count.

I'm in admin mode and I can see that we only have three guests and they are not of the 'usual suspect' IP addresses .

Maybe they got the message, don't mess with 'round eye' !!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well for me - this site is never boring and neither are the stats. I'm on here most days to have alook at the posts and I enjoy the insights i often gain form the experience of others - and thats the wonder of this site isn't it - so much experience and knowledge freely given to help fellow BMW nuts  :D I'm still surrounded by my jigsaw of a bike as I slowly work my way towards a finished resto. Without ths site I would not have found the work so comparatively easy - not only explanaitions but often great piks too to help the process along. So my thanks to you all for all the help over the last year - Adrian .......  ;)

I will try to be more active now that riding activity is pretty well gone and chores outside slowing down.....yeah...not really good excuses but LRB is just so good that I don't often post anymore....goes in spurts. LRB will be needing a tranny spline lube before next years adventures so that will get me back on to double check the well documented procedure.
