Title: Personal Internet Security
Post by: Bob_Roller on May 21, 2012, 08:48:18 PM
I'd like to pass on to incidents that two female friends found themselves in recently .

Both of them were paying members of internet dating sites .

Both of them starting sending emails on the site to members of interest .

One of them resides in Taos, New Mexico, the other in Alpine, California, an eastern suburb of Sandy Eggo .

The member in Taos was corresponding with a member in Loveland, Colorado a northern suburb of Denver .

She started sending emails from her personal email address, due to the length limitations of the dating site email .

Unknown to her the person she was corresponding with resided about 20 miles away, not 500 miles .

In her email, her full name comes with each email, her city and state of residence were already on the dating site, along with her picture, the other person used internet people search sites to get her address and telephone number .

He started stalking her, I'm not real sure what happened, as after she posted this, she disappeared from sight and I have not been able to contact her since, this was last August .

The other friend in Alpine, had exact the same experience, someone claiming to living 700 miles away, in reality resided only 13 miles away, starting stalking her after she started sending emails from her personal email address .

To make a long story short, law enforcement caught the person and he had been charged and convicted of stalking numerous times before .

This happened in the last two weeks .

So, if you know of any women involved in internet dating sites, you may want to pass this on to them .

If they do correspond to members outside of the dating site, make up an email address without any information that can be used to search their address and telephone number .

For communicating by email with people who may not be who / what they claim to be, I would recommend using an anonymous proxy server to keep you real ID and IP address secret.  The recipient only receives the message, and the metadata can only be traced as far back as the anonymous proxy server.  This was used quite often in the early day of newsgroups / usenet where some people wanted to or needed to maintain anonymity with respect to their postings.  Back in the day, anon.penet.fi was the big anonymous proxy server, but it no longer operates.  You can find one today by Googleing "anonymous proxy server list" to find one that is operating today.

These are good points to be considered, regardless of gender!
