Took the Grandkids to the National Railway Museum today as they were having a Harry Potter special and the verdict ..... brilliant, didnt get round half the exhibitions but this was my high even after seeing the "Flying Scotsman" and the "Mallard" and the Bullet Train.
These Sulzers are what i cut my teeth one we used the exact same ones as main generators on the MT vessels i sailed on, the main engines were a bit bigger... you could put this in any one of the 10 cylinders.
The Atlantic Coast Express was very impressive they had literally cut this engine in half to explain how it worked and the best bit ... it was all free.

Haven't been to the National Railway Museum in York for something like 25 years. The thing that fascinated me and still sticks in my mind was a demonstration of how a steam engines valve gear works by adjusting the stroke of the valve to let in more or less steam. Very clever engineering. Sort of akin to variable valve timing on modern engines.
One of my sons lives in York so I now have an excuse to go visit him and take a trip to the railway museum while we are there. Could be a good trip out on the bike for me when it gets a bit warmer.

You wont be disapointed Barry and it will be easier to park the bike.... go early you will need all day. Anyone traveling by Train exit the station by the North (back) not the main entrance as its only a couple of hundred yards.
