Title: HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN ONE OF THESE BEFORE?
Post by: balibeemer on November 06, 2011, 08:54:55 PM
Recently confiscated during an event here, this is a .22 cal over/under derringer. It folds up to a bit bigger than a zippo lighter. Fires .22 long rifle cartridges.
In all my years in the business, I have never seen one of these bits of kit before. no makers marks but really well constructed out of stainless steel.
The carrier did not have it loaded, and wasn't even carrying any ammo.

Internet searches have produced no results.

I've never seen that before - certainly looks home made, but whoever did it was a passable machinist!

Highly illegal here - like all firearms. The guy we took it off could be facing 15 - 25.
Must be an idiot though. Without ammo, about as useful as a rubber knife!

Just adding some more pics. Test fired last night - the muzzle flash is about 6 " long and it is accurate to about 4 ft. It gets chopped up today!

I am assuming that this contraption is a smoothbore firearm - I'd be REALLY impressed if he was able to button rifle the the barrels.

Certainly illegal in many places, too!

I am what is euphemistically called "a security consultant" and I sell peace of mind.

The barrel did have a rifled insert at the muzzle - about 2 mm long - just enough to give it a bit of a spin. A gunsmith here was telling me that this was one of the finest examples of the machinists art he has ever seen - and he is German. He thinks it is made in Israel.

This should be posted in the Penn State athletic field house.

It's a shame you have to make it "go away", unless you could make it "go away" in my direction!  ;D

How did you know it was a gun and not a garage door opener or something?

There were a few indicators:
1. It was hidden in a box of chocolates
2. It was heavy
3. Hadn't been cleaned and smelled of cordite
4. Instinct

Kinda looks like a zippo lighter.  I heard about these from our company security guy.  I'll forward and see if he knows anything about it.

That is pretty stupid to not even clean it before trying to smuggle it.

I suppose they didn't even make an attempt at resealing the box of chocolate?

Something like this was shown on a Pawn Shop cable  series in the US a while back.  It was made in the UK for, it was said, professional gamblers.  They often didn't carry  carried maker's marks.

The chocolate box was an uneven weight - That was one of the biggest giveaways

One of my customers was a production machine shop, and one thing they used to do was make guns for our movie industry - most were just props, but some had to be fired as well. They had a nice gattling gun out the back of the shop that fired .22's they used to test fire sometimes.

One day the owner and I were going home in the same traffic jam,I was in my Pajero,he in a Rangerover,so we were higher than the cars around us.  He held his hand palm out towards me,and concealed in his palm was a small gun....either something for a job,or just one he made for himself.  Small hand grafted weapons are certainly out there.
