Title: Leaking Cylinder
Post by: BooG on September 24, 2008, 08:55:55 AM
A close inspection has revealed that the starting probs I have had could be down to a lack of compression. The left cylinder is "bubbling" very slightly on top: you can only just see it, but you can hear a faint hiss as the bike is running if you place your ear near the cylinder.
I suppose this is the moment to pull the jugs, do the pushrod tube seals, replace the o-rings etc.
Any links for cylinder removal? Never done this before. At least my exhaust nuts are ok.
After that I might get to do the driveshaft gaitor!! All seems to arrive at once dosen't it??

Hope you have not just washed the bike....It could be residue water boiling off.

Normally a squeek is associated with this sort of thing?

Is the cylinder bubbling at the valve cover or the head gasket.  I too have seen steam after washing mine.  Also I had a terrible time getting her to crank last week and found that the jam nut on the choke adjustment sleeve on the right hand carb had backed off and I was only choking the left side.  She started but it took forever and I did not find the problem until the second day after several hard cold starts.

The actual leak seems to be from the cylinder base, topside. There is some oil staining also. Ther new 0 rings and various gaskets have arrived, but I won't be able to sort it now till Monday. I am also half way through replacing the driveshaft gator!! Not only that, but I'm gonna try helicoiling the center studs also....then pushrod seals....then, if I can afford it...I might get a new battery!! Then I need to pay my girlfriend some attention....she thinks I'm obsessed!
