Title: Life choices
Post by: Dizerens5 on December 22, 2010, 04:17:46 PM
I’m worried about life choices.
When I was a kid in school, I wanted to be a tommy-gunner in the secret police. When I was 16 I rode around on a 1939 Triumph Speed Twin. Then I had a working (or sometimes non-working) life as a desk-driver taking care to keep out of the way of important people. Now I’m 71 and I truck around on an old R65  --   at least when there’s no snow and ice, which is not the case just now.
It’s all been good. Have I done ok, or is there something wrong with me?

Obviously there's nothing wrong.  You are still on the right side of the dirt and you are still riding and enjoy it.  Keep it going!

Worrying about the past and paths taken can be an exercise in frustration, often leading to depression. The only thing to take from the unchangeable past is lessons learned. That knowledge may then be used to guide today's and tomorrow's choices.

With all respect to your question, I do hope that it's only the rough English weather and a bit of cabin fever that's causing your personal concerns. You have friends here.

This is the best of all possible worlds - the one that you find yourself in right now!

I can't over indulge a tendency to rethink actions or choices made long ago - it usually tends to make me sad and miserable thinking that I might be better off today had I done x instead of y, or married Jane instead of dumping her, etc. etc.   But, I might also have ended up going bankrupt, divorced, or dead by now, too!   So, as Monte and Mike point out - as long as you're on the top side of the dirt, have a home of some sort and a motorcycle to ride, things really are pretty good, and it is, in fact, a wonderful life.

Seems to me you made some good choices. Anyone who's still riding at 71 is doing OK in my book and you give me a target to aim for. I've got another 15 years yet to match up to your achievement.

We all wish for something better and if and when we get there realise it was all about the journey and not the destination.

And you're happy riding your R65.  I don't see how it can get any better than this.  I'm always thankful for what I have and where I am.  You can't change the past and it is, in fact, what makes you who you are today.

Rejoice and be glad in it!

For many years my parents were responsible for my misery, but now they are both dead and after thinking things through I have concluded that the reason why people deny listening to my lamentations over my spoiled (thanks to the parents, bad bosses and my lack of luck in life in general) life is that they are not worth listening to. And things not worth listening to are best forgotten.

Instead I enjoy the facts that I am able to ride my r65, that my children have good educations and jobs, and that my grandson is thriving and well. The last 62 years haven't been so bad after all and I hope that the next 40 will be even better.

I wish you all a merry Xmas and a happy new year.

greetings from a wintery north with frost and snow

Every day I can swing a leg over the seat of my motorcycle is a good day.  In fact I drove home from work in the snow Christmas day and went riding in the snow and wind today in 22'F weather and was happy as a clam on both.

Life is good.

Lots of responses to Constellation in the last five days but no word from our friend. How be you, Constellation?

I would regret losing the speed twin somewhere along the way.

Can one of our British brethren go knock on Constellation's door?

I'm glad nobody seems to think I got it all wrong. Thanks, friends all!
Today Christmas is over, two of my children and three grandchildren (there are others) have gone home after amusing me for a few days, the son-in-law who is ace in the kitchen made us a grand Xmas dinner, my other daughter and grandson in Minnesota sent greetings, now after a month of below-freezing and ice and snow on the ground the thermo is creeping up at last -- couple more degrees and the R65 will roll out again...what more could I want?

Today Christmas is over

I like Christmas day alright, its the weeks leading up to it I could do with out.

Is it just me or now it's over is one of the best things about Christmas that it doesn't happen again for another whole year ?

It'll all start again soon enough. Remember Tom Lehrer's old song about the commercialization of Christmas? --
On Christmas day you can't get sore
Your fellow man you must adore
There's time to rob him all the more
The other three hundred and sixty-four!

Positive note for all us North of the Equator...the days are now getting visibly longer and that extra light sure helps the mood!!!!
Before Christmas here there is a tendency to think there is plenty of time to get at the little jobs on the bike...putting on the new farkles etc. But now, one can get feeling pressured to get it all done!! And order MORE!!!!

We live in Grey County, ON and it IS grey! Caused by the adjacent huge Lake Huron which hasn't frozen over and supplying a ton of moisture for the formation of clouds. Clouds get overstuffed with moisture and start dripping on us, either rain or snow!!! Lack of sun can be depressing! So I'm always thinking bikes and now practising piano like mad to prepare for my piano accompaniment course next August at the Gaelic College in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Of course there is another excuse to RIDE there, right through the gorgeous New England States. Look out nhmaf!!!

I've got soooooo many motorcycle "to-dos" that need to get "to-done", now!     I wish that I had spent the extra $$ and time this summer getting a propane heater hooked up in the garage - it has been too chilly to spend much time out there lately, and the electric heater that is there - well, let's just say it can make the wheel on my wattmeter spin like a 78 RPM record!
